Hurry last two hours to double your donation! Please support the Big Give Christmas Appeal!
Thank you so much for your support.

In low-income countries, drawing parallels with the Christmas story is still too easy. At the time of the Nativity, only the rich sought medical help in childbirth. Today in sub-Saharan Africa roughly 50% of mothers give birth without a midwife. Help us to provide safe childbirth in rural Africa.…

Today is World Health Day 2025 and it is fantastic that this year’s theme is ‘Healthy Beginnings and Hopeful Futures’. As Chair and Co-Founder of the charity Maternity Worldwide, we have worked tirelessly since 2002 to both advocate for improved maternal and newborn health in low-income countries, and to run projects to save lives in childbirth in 12 countries. We are currently working in rural Uganda and Malawi both at the village level (women’s empowerment, education and financial mobility) and health facility level (training, staffing and equipment) as an integrated approach to improve health of women and their babies. Our 4th photo comes fromJames Matabwa Vehicle support and mechanic, Zomba, Malawi.

James has taken on an additional role in 2024 growing seedlings for distribution to participants in the 90 village women’s groups.

He told me: “This picture speaks of the importance of vegetables in the human body so as to maintain good health. Not only that but also as a source of income after selling vegetables to improve livelihoods”

As part of our Big Give matched funding appeal (Double the amount of your donation) we have asked our staff in Uganda and Malawi to choose their favourite projects photos of 2024.

https://donate.biggive.org/campaign/a056900002TPXIrAAP?c=51969

Emma Nkwinika, Project Field Officer, Zomba, Malawi told us why she chose this photo:

“This picture highlights the power of community and collaboration, which could be tied to efforts in improving maternal and child health. It represents a group of people actively working together to support healthcare initiatives in rural and hard to reach areas. The presence of women, children, and a diverse range of individuals signifies collective action toward a shared goal of saving lives in childbirth. This is not just a picture, it’s a testament to what can be achieved when communities work together for a common purpose. My true reflection my favourite picture in 2024!”

Please donate now to double your impact! Matched funding ends on Tuesday!
