Wolverhampton Wood Recycling in the news

Wolverhampton Wood Recycling CIC - the newest member of our Community Wood Recycling network - has been featured by the BBC for the inspiring social and environmental impact they’re already bringing to the local community.

Founded by Jim Brennan and Eimert de Graaff, the social enterprise is already proving just how transformative rescued wood can be. Since launching at the end of last year, they’ve been getting stuck in to all the work of a busy wood recycling project.

As the BBC explains, Jim and Eimert have brought together a dedicated team of volunteers ranging from people in their early twenties to those well into their seventies, who collect unwanted timber from building sites, sort it, clean it and give it a second life. This rescued wood is either sold for DIY projects or transformed into hand‑crafted items including benches, bird boxes and bespoke pieces. Their newly opened retail area is already proving popular, and the project is steadily building its presence while saving wood from the waste stream across a wide area stretching from west Birmingham to Stoke-on-Trent, Worcester, Shrewsbury and Oswestry. Meanwhile, their volunteers, many of whom are marginalised or dealing with challenges in their lives, are benefitting from the opportunity to develop their skills, build their confidence, and be part of a beacon of sustainability in their local community.

Jim and Eimert are now working to develop a Men’s Shed, offering a safe, welcoming space where people experiencing isolation, particularly men post‑retirement, can come together, make things, talk, and support one another. With future plans for a repair café, skills workshops, and more paid roles to fight unemployment, they’re building a community.

Jim’s own experience with mental health challenges alongside his professional work in the charity sector has shaped his vision for the organisation. As he told the BBC, recycling wood is just the start: “It’s using the recycling of used wood to do good in the community… give it a new life.”

Eimert brings his own perspective too, having retired five years ago and wanting to give something back. “It keeps me fit,” he says - and anyone who has stepped inside a wood recycling workshop knows exactly what he means.

We’re incredibly proud to welcome Wolverhampton Wood Recycling into the Community Wood Recycling network and thrilled to see their inspiring approach recognised by the BBC. Their belief in using waste wood to change lives reflects the values that underpin our entire movement.

If you’re in Manchester City Centre, keep an eye out for the new benches in Chinatown, built by the brilliant team at Touch Wood Manchester, one of the social enterprises in our Community Wood Recycling network.

Projects like this mean a lot to our teams. Creating something for a public space - something that people will sit on, notice, and enjoy - is a real source of pride. For many of our trainees and staff, seeing what they've made right there in the city centre is a confidence‑boosting reminder of the skills they’ve built and the value of their work.

Each bench was handmade from reclaimed timber, including wood recovered during the renovation of Manchester Town Hall. It’s a great example of what happens when local organisations choose reuse: waste is reduced, skills are strengthened, and beautiful, durable pieces are made for the community.

Huge congratulations to everyone at Touch Wood Manchester, and thank you to the partners who made this project possible.

We’re delighted to welcome a new member into our network. Following the closure of Wood Saints in Wolverhampton, some of the dedicated staff, volunteers and supporters of the project have come together to launch Wolverhampton Wood Recycling CIC, a social enterprise committed to keeping the mission alive.

They will continue the vital work of reducing waste wood, protecting the environment and supporting the local community. They’ll be doing this through confidence-building workshops, volunteering opportunities and by selling the wood they collect and transforming discarded timber into beautiful products. You'll find them at Unit 107, Imex Business Park, off Moorfield Road, Wolverhampton, United Kingdom, WV2 4XD. Current opening times are:

Wed 9am - 4pm
Thur 9am - 4pm
Fri 9am - 4pm
Sat 9am - 1pm

We wish the new enterprise every success!

Thank you to St Albans Wood Recycling for hosting our members’ meeting last week.

We had a fantastic turnout, and members left inspired after exploring the treasure trove of wood in their welcoming Wood Store and learning how the project transforms lives while delivering a waste wood collection service to clients ranging from house builders to the film and TV industry.

The meeting was a great opportunity for our wood recyclers to come together, share successes, discuss challenges, and look ahead to future plans. As always, the national office team came away motivated by the incredible work our members do - and excited for what 2026 will bring!
