During a cupboard rummage yesterday we found this snap (yes, a physical photograph!) of a September 2001 advert for the new BMW Mini featuring an actual car on the side of our building.

Look what we found rumaging through the cupboards as part of our Community Base history research project. A straight to VHS release from 2003 that was sent out to councils, libraries and schools. The 20 minute thriller has 48% on Rotten Tomatoes and will be digitised soon.

So, it was 30 years ago today that Community Base was officially registered with Companies House. It was two years in the making, and it'd take another 18 months to secure and open the building we call home. We're seeing today as the start of a process researching and documenting our history - which is really a history of the community and voluntary sector in the city.

This is a piece written by Simon Northmore, gen sec of Brighton Council for Voluntary Service (CVS), at the time of incorporation. The CVS were instrumental in setting up Community Base, with Simon and the incredible Keith Braid at the forefront. Another key figure was the late Tehmtan Framroze, a Labour councillor and former mayor who was our first chair. But there were so many more important figures! Watch this space for more info.

Also included is a draft outline of what space the initial organisations would take in the building. A nice little window into those early days!

We've had quite a few film screenings up in our Conference Room of late and there is another one coming up this Saturday. The Clare Project are showing Rainbow Menopause, a ground-breaking short film that sheds light on the often-overlooked experiences of LGBTQ+ people navigating menopause.

There will also be a Q&A with a panel including the film's director Ceri Harris. Full details can be found here πŸ‘‡

Our April events schedule is out the gate! With spring starting to fully express itself we have the Urban Dryad returning for another houseplant hospital - no doubt there are a few chlorophytum comosum's across the building in dire need of a larger pot.

We're also starting a new meet-up for caseworkers that we hope can emulate our now well established comms meet-up. Feels like there is so much potential with 30+ incredible charities in this building but we're only just scratching the surface.

As always, all events are open to anyone using Community Base as a postal address. So pop along and join in!
