Short Breaks provide fun, leisure and social activities for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities outside the school day. This enables them to try new experiences, learn new skills, develop friendships, confidence and have fun! Some activities can involve the whole family too.

Activities are delivered by a wide range of experienced providers across the whole of West Sussex.

Who can attend?
Short Breaks are available to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities under 18 year of age, who are resident in West Sussex.

Families are encouraged to sign-up early by contacting their chosen suppliers directly. Suppliers will be able to give you details of their waiting lists.

Craft Club is back with Play with Clay!

At September's Craft Club we're getting hands-on with clay: moulding, pinching, rolling, coiling, printing, sculpting and even throwing on the wheel. Whether you're a crafting newbie or you've tried it before, there's something for everyone.

We’d like you to meet Mark who, along with Marilyne and Hugo, recently joined the BCT Board of eleven Trustees.

Mark has spent his career i the financial services sector specialising in employee benefits and delivery of change. He has lived in Brighton for over 30 years, with his two (now adult) children attending local schools. His interests include attempting to cultivate vegetables on his allotment and walking in the wonderful surrounding countryside.

Mark was drawn to the BCT as he passionately believes that every child and young adult should have the opportunity to develop to their full potential and thrive in our increasingly challenging world. In his brief time as a Trustee, he has been hugely impressed with the drive and ethos of the team in supporting families to live full and rewarding lives.

Mark is looking forward to supporting both the Board and the team to deliver their strategy to support vision impaired young people and their families.

The last few tickets remain for our trip to the Hawth in Crawley to watch an audio described performance of Mean Girls the musical. If you have watched the film, you’ll know the story. This is a brilliant opportunity to experience an iconic show as it goes on tour!

Our trip is on Saturday 3 October, from 1.45pm - 5.15pm, and is open to BCT clients aged 10 to 29 (not yet a member? Check out the website to register). The age guidance for this show is 10 and over, as it contains mature themes.

This event costs £15 and includes a ticket to the show for yourself and a personal assistant/parent if required. There is a limit of one assistant per person, however if you do require a second person to assist you for disability-related reasons, please contact us. If cost is a barrier, please let us know as we may be able to assist you with this.

Parents and carers may be interested in a series of podcasts from the RNIB focusing on the emotional wellbeing of children and young people with vision impairment.

In each episode, members of RNIB's Children, Young People and Families (CYPF) and Education Support Team speak with NHS Clinical Psychologist Ian McCubbin. Ian is part of a specialist team working in hospitals across the UK to support children and young people with sight loss, with services funded by Fight for Sight.

The podcast topics have been shaped by feedback from parents and carers and cover many of the questions and challenges that families commonly face. Each episode offers practical advice, strategies and insights to help support children's emotional wellbeing and development.

Looking for a relaxed, creative morning out these summer holidays?

Our new monthly Craft Club is back with a woolly twist! This month, BCT clients can get hands-on with soft, colourful yarns – knitting, felting, tassel-making and more – while making friends and having fun in a supportive space.

Possability People’s friendly advice team are experts in advising and supporting disabled people, their friends and families, and their carers. Most of the team have lived experience of being disabled or having a long-term health condition.

Their advice team works with us to provide advice support specifically for BCT’s service users and community.

The team can offer support for completing benefit forms related to disability, for new applications, reviews and in some cases appeals. They can also help with disabled bus pass applications, Blue Badge applications, some council tax enquiries and food bank referrals.

The Advice Centre is also knowledgeable about equipment, assistive technology, transport, accessible holidays, local support groups and alternative services. Where they cannot help, they try to signpost elsewhere.
