Christian history wears many faces.

BMECP was pleased to take part in the Diocese of Chichester's Black History in Church Spaces exhibition on Saturday

It was a wonderful opportunity to learn about Project Spire, hear Kwesi Ochosi share the story of Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther, and listen to Flo Sparham reflect on why Black History Month should encourage learning, reflection and action that continues beyond October.

We were also honoured to participate in remembering the Ugandan Martyrs, with our Centre Manager, Juliet, reading their names on behalf of BMECP.

For us, community empowerment isn't only about access to opportunities. It is also about identity, history, representation and belonging.

Yesterday, we welcomed 9 amazing employers, and organisations to the BMECP Job Fair, connecting local people with jobs, training opportunities, career advice, and new possibilities.

It was great to see such a diverse range of attendees join us, from:
🎓 College students
🎓 University students
💼 Job seekers
🔄 People exploring career changes
🚀 Individuals looking for their next opportunity

A big thank you to all the employers who attended and spent time speaking with attendees about careers, vacancies, and pathways into their sectors.

We were also proud to have our volunteers running the BMECP stand, sharing information about volunteering opportunities and how people can get in the work we do.

Special thanks to our Trustees who came along to support.

Events like this remind us of the power of bringing people together, creating connections, building confidence, and opening doors to opportunities.

✨ A week of connection, celebration and collaboration at BMECP! ✨

We were proud to see our Trustees join the Voice4Change England 20th Anniversary celebrations, embracing the cultural attire theme and celebrating two decades of championing diverse communities, representation, and social justice. 🌍🎉

This week also saw our Community Engagement Officer and Centre Manager present BMECP’s work to more than 30 staff members at Department for Work & Pensions Brighton Jobcentre. It was a fantastic opportunity to share our services and explore ways of working together to better support our communities through:

💼 Business support for startups and aspiring entrepreneurs
🔗 Future partnership opportunities

This week, our Community Engagement Officer had the pleasure of meeting with different BME communities across Brighton & Hove, including spending time with the vibrant Gujarati community.

From meaningful conversations and community building to celebrating a member's birthday, it was a wonderful reminder of the power of connection, culture, and coming together.

This October, we're opening up opportunities for BME individuals, community groups and organisations to create, connect and celebrate.

🎙️ Need a space to record a podcast, shoot content, host a creative session or bring people together? Through our partnership with Rainbow Studio, you can access studio sessions for just £5 per person (2 hours).

🏢 Looking for a venue? BME individuals and community groups can also book selected rooms at the BMECP Centre for FREE throughout October.

Whether you're planning a workshop, networking event, community gathering, creative project or cultural celebration, we're here to help bring your ideas to life.

🤝 Stronger Together: Community & Police

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for our Community & Police conversation at BMECP.

With over 30 attendees, including community members, Sussex Police representatives, and experts in racial justice and equality, the event created a positive space for honest conversations about trust, safety, representation, accountability, and how we can work together to build stronger communities.

We were encouraged by the open dialogue and commitment from all sides to continue these conversations and turn ideas into action.

One exciting opportunity discussed was the chance for community members to become Community Advocates, helping to shape policing policies and services that affect our communities.

This is an important first step, and we look forward to continuing the conversation and ensuring community voices remain at the heart of change.

✨ We're off with Week 2 of our Fostering Pathways Programme! ✨

Last week, we explored the UK fostering system and why more foster carers from Black and minority ethnic communities are needed. This week, we're diving deeper into the experiences and needs of children in care, and the importance of culturally supportive placements. 💛

Over the next 10 weeks, participants will continue learning, sharing experiences, challenging misconceptions, and exploring whether fostering could be part of their journey.
Every conversation brings us one step closer to ensuring more children can grow up in homes that reflect their culture, identity, and community. 🤝
