Yesterday at the moving memorial held at Afrori Books , we heard beautiful, powerful testimonies about Jason. The stories shared all pointed to one thing: the immense, genuine love he had for people.

We encourage everyone to read his book—to sit with his words, experience his story for yourself, and let his journey remain a powerful reminder of what is possible for us as a Black and minority ethnic community. 🕊️✨

The tragic and untimely passing of Professor Jason Arday has sent shockwaves through our communities. As BMECP, we cannot remain silent. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and everyone affected by this profound loss.

Jason’s story—his incredible rise and his heartbreaking, sudden end—exposes a deeply painful reality that many Black and minority ethnic individuals know all too well.

Too often, our scholars, leaders, and pioneers are highly elevated as symbols of institutional progress, only to be left entirely exposed when the tide turns. The sheer velocity and hostility of the public and media scrutiny he faced in his final weeks crossed a line from accountability into a devastating, isolating onslaught. It highlights a systemic failure in the duty of care that institutions owe to BME individuals in high-pressure spaces.

This tragedy is a stark reminder of the immense, often invisible weight carried by those who break barriers, and the urgent need for systemic change in how our institutions protect and support Black talent.

To our community: we see you, we hear you, and we know how heavy this news feels. Please remember you do not have to carry this grief alone. Protect your peace, lean on each other, and reach out if you need support.

Rest in power, Jason Arday. 🕊️🖤

🌱 BMECP is proud to join Food Use Places!

We're now part of a partnership of 18 organisations across Sussex working together to reduce food and packaging waste and support community-led climate action.

Over the next 12 months, we'll be engaging our community through activities including:

♻️ Recycling workshops
🥕 Cooking with surplus food
🌿 Composting and food growing
🍲 Food sharing and community meals

By building skills, confidence and knowledge, we can all take simple steps to waste less, reuse more and help protect our environment.

Composting, food growing, food sharing – Climate Action is happening here.

Food Use Places works with trusted community-rooted organisations and is helping communities often left out of climate action become part of the solution.

🎶✨ Music, memories, laughter, and connection! ✨🎶

We recently hosted a fantastic taster session at the BMECP Centre with Kadir Karababa in preparation for the One Song Brighton 2026 project. It was a joyful and engaging session filled with conversations, shared experiences, creativity, and plenty of fun as participants explored how music can connect us to our stories, cultures, and sense of belonging.

One Song Brighton is a unique project for women aged 18+ who were born outside the UK and now live here. Through a series of free workshops, participants will explore songs, memories, and personal stories connected to the places they first called home, helping to create a powerful exhibition celebrating the diverse voices and experiences of Brighton & Hove.

✅ Free workshops
✅ Free lunch provided
✅ Travel support available
✅ Translation and language support available
✅ No singing or performing experience needed!

Interested in taking part? Contact Kadir Karababa at [email protected] or call 07947 189949 to find out more.

✨ JULY DUMP ✨

What a month it's been at BMECP! 💛

July was filled with learning, connection, celebration and community impact.

🎓 We celebrated the successful completion of our first Fostering Pathways Programme cohort, with participants taking important steps towards becoming foster carers and helping to create more culturally reflective homes for children in care.

🤝 We welcomed community organisations, funders and partners to our Meet the Funders event, creating opportunities for learning, networking and future collaboration.

🏏⚽ Our Trustees got out into the community too, attending both a cricket match and a football match, strengthening relationships and representing BMECP across Sussex.

🏛️ We were proud to join partners and community leaders at the launch of the Brighton & Hove Civic Leadership Programme, delivered in partnership with Operation Black Vote (OBV), supporting greater representation and leadership within our communities.

And through it all, we continued bringing people together through our groups, programmes, partnerships and events.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey so far. 💛

✨ Here's to new opportunities, deeper connections and even greater impact in August.
