Between showers we managed to bring in the garlic at Stanmer Wellbeing gardens today. This abundant harvest is making its way to Community Kitchen for use in our community courses. Thanks to our weather hardy volunteers who also planted out loads of leeks, squash, courgettes and summer salad. If you want to join us you can sign up on bhfood.org.uk

This volunteers week we'd like to thank our wonderful compost monitors.

Every turn, every worm, every peeling saved is creating living compost right here in our neighbourhoods and it’s all down to their hard work.

Communities making compost together for free. Supporting biodiversity, growing friendships and tackling climate change from the ground up, we’re lucky to have such an incredible crew!

Lush people make lush gardens grow 🌱

That’s why today we are thanking our community garden volunteers. They show up, rain or shine, to get their hands in the soil at the Preston Park Demo Garden, Stanmer Wellbeing Gardens, and Saunders Park Edible Garden.

Their effort and care make these spaces more biodiverse and wildlife friendly for everyone to enjoy.

And it’s more than just rewarding physical work. Conversations round the compost heap, the coffee pot or the fire have sparked countless new connections and friendships.

Many of our volunteers have been coming for years, offering longstanding dedication to our outdoor spaces. Some are newer and are bringing fabulously fresh energy to our community gardens across . Thank you to you all.

It's World Environment Day 🌱

This year's theme is climate action, and the weather is certainly proving why we need to take it seriously. After some parts of the country experienced their wettest winter, the hottest May on record hit farmers hard.

From flooded fields to scorched earth, the increasing unpredictability of the seasons is impacting livelihoods and food production.

The food choices we make have the potential to make a difference to climate change as food production contributes to 30% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide - that means how food is grown, and not transported.

Lower your impact by eating seasonally and as locally as you can, eating less but better meat, and prioritising businesses with tracibility and sustainability at their core. Check out our website for a link to the best local food producers and suppliers.

Sam volunteers with Sussex Surplus helping to rescue pumpkins that would otherwise have gone to waste.

Sam is one of 800 volunteers who help to reduce food waste across Sussex as part of the Food Use Places project.

Not leaving the pumpkins to rot reduces the amount of methane released while decomposing and instead gets turned into a meal for the community – well done Sam!

Sam has also learned skills and met new people through volunteering whilst enjoying a day outside.

Interested in volunteering? Reach out to Sussex Surplus or head to www.bhfood.org.uk/category/get-involved/volunteer/

to this wonderful night with our Food Support Network volunteers.

This celebration was all about recognising their dedication and the value of community-led food support. Across , more than 650 food heroes give an astonishing 128K hours every year to keep vital services running. A third of project leaders volunteer their time for free. It's about more than just food. Volunteers also support people with debt, housing, health, and more, changing lives across our city.

While we continue to advocate for policies that tackle the causes of poverty and food insecurity, we find moments of gratitude. We are thankful for this network of local changemakers, not just during , but every day.
