💙 A huge thank you to Wickes! 💙

We’re incredibly grateful to Wickes for donating a fully fitted communal kitchen for one of our projects, complete with appliances.😍

The kitchen, from Wickes’ new Carnaby microshaker range, was created as a display for their annual conference. Rather than letting it go to waste, Wickes chose to give it a new home here at YMCA Brighton. This created a fresh, welcoming space for our residents to cook, connect, and gather.🎉

Thank you, Wickes We are thrilled with the kitchen and are making full use of it! 🥣

A huge thank you to our wonderful friend Charlie Clarke who took this wonderful snap! Such a talented photographer!

🏳️‍🌈 Happy Pride! 🏳️‍🌈

Wishing everyone a joyful, colourful and uplifting Pride weekend! 💖

This month, we are especially proud to be joining forces with Brighton & Hove LGBT Switchboard to bring our LGBTQ+ residents together at an event at Steine House.

Together, we’ll create a welcoming, inclusive, and community-centred space where residents can connect, learn about local services, access confidential one-to-one support, and enjoy creative activities.

Thank you to Pizza Pilgrims and Co-op in Brighton for supporting the event with catering. It's wonderful when local businesses show such support to such important events!

Here’s to community, connection, kindness and celebrating being exactly who you are.

Happy Pride, Brighton!@@

Thank you so much to everyone at Waitrose & Partners on Western Road for supporting us through the Community Matters green token scheme over the last few months. 💚

The scheme lets shoppers vote for local charities to win donations of three amounts,

We're absolutely delighted to be awarded £500, and every penny will be put to good use to help us continue our work in the community.👏

We're also incredibly grateful to everyone who took the time to vote for us. A very special thank you to Jo (pictured), who has been so supportive.

Finally, we'd like to wish the next three charities taking part the very best of luck.💯

Thank you again, Waitrose Western Road! 💚✨

Our new Prime Minister’s commitment to making ending rough sleeping a national priority sends a powerful message: everyone deserves a safe place to call home. 🏠

With the right support at the right time, people can avoid or move on from crisis, rebuild their lives and reach their potential.

We welcome the Government’s focus on prevention and partnership. But ending rough sleeping means more than getting people off the streets. It also means ensuring there are genuinely affordable homes for people to move into.

Too many people in supported housing are ready to live independently but have nowhere affordable to go.

Expanding affordable housing and move-on accommodation is essential if we are to end rough sleeping for good and give more people the opportunity to live independently and be part of their communities again.

🎨 Creativity is flourishing at Steine House! 🎨

A huge thank you to the wonderful Linda and her colleagues from Brighton and Hove Soiree Rotary Club for donating a beautiful wooden easel, paints and a large canvas for one of our residents.

Following our Artists Open Houses event in May, our resident mentioned to Linda that he needed more art materials. She and her fellow Rotarians made sure that wish became a reality.

Our resident was thrilled and got straight to work on a new painting as soon as the easel was set up! 😊

Their generosity also extended to our Steine House art class. Thanks to donations from CASS ART Brighton, our favourite art materials supplier, residents received acrylic paints and a few large canvases.

They also donated canvases that could be painted over and enjoyed again.

Our art groups are so important because they provide opportunities for self-expression, creativity and connection, while supporting wellbeing, building confidence and fostering a sense of achievement. 🎉

We are incredibly grateful to The Brighton and Hove Soirée Rotary Club for their kindness and support.

Colleague Spotlight: Meet Mark Handford!

For the past seven years, Mark has been part of the YMCA Brighton team, bringing a wealth of life experience to his role as an experienced Project Worker, supporting our residents every day.

Alongside his frontline role, Mark has used his exceptional writing talent to create a thoughtful and inspiring blog that shines a light on the realities of supported housing.

His work has been recognised beyond our charity, with articles featured by The Big Issue and Homeless Link.

Mark told us, "The idea came from wanting to share the reality of supported housing with people who have never experienced it."

Mark's blog goes beyond the headlines and statistics, telling the human stories behind homelessness, addiction and trauma, while also reflecting on the challenges and rewards of working in the sector.

Through honest, compassionate writing, he invites readers to question assumptions and gain a deeper understanding of the complex realities of supported housing.

Mark's aim is for "every reader to finish an article with a little more understanding and compassion than they had before."

We're incredibly proud of Mark and grateful for the insight, empathy and authenticity he brings, not only to his writing, but to YMCA Brighton every day.
