Brighton and Hove Black History

Brighton and Hove Black History The primary aim of the organisation is to challenge racism and prejudice by raising awareness of the It is not intended that our definition excludes others.

Brighton and Hove Black History was formally launched in Brighton in October 2002. The group’s existence owes a lot to the passion of and persistence of Bert Williams MBE, who has spent much of his retired life researching and presenting the multicultural history of the city. The group has now expanded to encompass a thriving team of local volunteers from a variety of cultural backgrounds. The pri

mary aim of the organisation is to challenge racism and prejudice by raising awareness of the multicultural history of Britain, with particular reference to Brighton and Hove and Sussex. The groups seeks to achieve its aim through four main objectives:
• To research and collect information on Brighton and Hove’s history and cultural heritage – in particular that which relates to the presence of Black and Minority Ethnic people in Brighton, and their contribution to the city
• To compile, document, archive and distribute a comprehensive oral history from the first generation “elders” within Brighton and Hove’s Black communities
• To encourage diverse communities to participate in mapping Brighton and Hove’s cultural heritage, in a process of sharing and learning from each other’s cultures
• To facilitate public events that mark and celebrate Black History Month

Our definition of ‘Black’

The term ‘Black’ as used by Brighton and Hove Black History includes people whose ancestral origins are African, Asian, Caribbean, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Romany, the indigenous people of the South Pacific Islands, the American continents, Australia and New Zealand. We believe that everyone has a contribution to make in the exploration of this history, and all are welcome to join the Brighton and Hove Black History group.
