💬 We asked how you found maths at school...

So many of you shared experiences that stayed with you long after you left the classroom, be it crying over homework, minds going blank, or teachers who wrote off your potential before you'd even had a chance.

Maths anxiety is incredibly common. And for a lot of us, it didn't come from nowhere. Experiences like being told you're not a maths person, being put on the spot in class, or getting an answer wrong in front of your classmates all stick with us and shape how we see our own ability.

But hey, the good news is that maths anxiety is something that can change and here are some practical ways to start easing it:

✅ Recognise the anxiety and know it can change
✅ Take your time and set small, achievable goals
✅ Know that maths ability can change at any age

Did any of these experiences sound familiar? Tell us in the comments 👇

Here’s the second of our summer posts from the National Numeracy Team from around the UK and Ireland. This time from our Head of Marketing - Maurice Tse-Leon - having a budget day out in the pricey South East:

A £50 day out in East Sussex with the kids? Absolutely. 🌿🚂

As parents, numbers can be everywhere on a day out – and some are less fun than others, like the price of an ice cream! 🍦

So I’ve worked out a family day out from Hassocks to Southease for around £50, using public transport, our feet and a packed lunch.

🚶 Walk to the station
🥪 £25 on lunch and snacks
🚂 £13.30 for off-peak return train tickets
🌳 Explore Southease and the South Downs
⚽ Football, rope swing, birdsong and a picnic
🍺 A pub stop at the Abergavenny Arms
🚂 Home by 4pm, with exhausted children in tow!

Southease is one of my favourite places for a day out. There’s barely anything there – and that’s exactly the point. No queues, no entry fees, no expensive attractions. Just beautiful countryside, a village, a river and plenty of space for the kids to run around.

Mission complete: a full day out for around £50. 💷

Where’s your favourite low-cost family day out? 👇

“I don’t really use numbers in everyday life.”

Oh really? 👀 How about…

⏰ Working out what time you need to leave
🌦️ Checking the weather forecast
📰 Reading and interpreting stats in the news
🛒 Planning your budget for the food shop
🥪 Working out the best deal for lunch
💷 Checking your bank balance
🗺️ Planning your journey

We all use numbers every day — sometimes without even thinking about it!

From working out timings and costs to understanding information and making decisions, numeracy is part of everyday life.

How many of these have you done today? 👇

📅 Mark your calendars: Number Confidence Week is coming 2-8 November!

Around half of working-age adults in the country are estimated to have the numeracy level expected of a primary school child, and over a third of adults experience maths anxiety.

Number Confidence Week exists to help adults and children take those crucial first steps towards a more number confident future, rather than feeling afraid or avoiding the subject altogether.
