James Bromwich Commemorating the Dead: Roman monuments in SW France

In south-west France there are some of the best preserved mausoleums in all of France. They are distinctive features of the landscape, often isolated, having towers with pyramidal tops once reaching over 20 metres high.
Attend the lecture to find out about how and why these dedications took place.

Thank you for everyone who came out to Hale Farm Campsite this year!

Neil Woods was presented with the “Golden Trowel” awarded for Digger of the Year 2026. The first digger to win it a second time! A quick mention for Xavier and Heloise who pimped the trophy with a professionally engraved plaque.

We also had 12 young Brighton YAC members join us, this is always a pleasure.

We had a visit from the farmer to say how pleased she was with work we had done on the excavation and hopes to welcome us back again next year.

The diggers tidied the site up prior to flying a drone across the excavation and even took some snaps of the digging team, trowels rampant.

Most of the finds this season were lumps of building material, burnt chalk and shiny pieces of slag. All good evidence for the lime kiln itself, which we strongly believe is located further down the field from the ditch beneath the branches of a large ash tree. That could be a challenge.

It was far too much cake from Barbara and Andrew, and many of the diggers gathered for a well-deserved end of season pint at the Gun Hill pub afterwards.
