🎨 New Murals at Lynchet Close Play Park & Community Garden 🪲🐟🌿

Take a look at the fantastic new murals celebrating the wildlife and natural heritage of Hollingdean.

The artwork features the common cockchafer (maybug), famous for its distinctive whirring flight on spring evenings, alongside mackerel, a familiar fish from the Brighton coast.

The murals were funded by Clarion Housing as part of their biodiversity project. We’re really pleased to have played a small part by suggesting the idea of creating murals to celebrate our local wildlife.

We hope you enjoy the new artwork as much as we do. If you’re passing by, stop and have a look! 🌸

It was a pleasure to welcome Carlos, a researcher from Queen Mary University of London, and Enrica, a student from the University of Sussex, to join us for our Tree Guardians session. 🌳🌱 They got stuck in with the activities and spent time learning about our community-led work.

Afterwards, we showed them around the Old Green Community Garden, the Two Trees Community Garden, and our newly planted forest garden. Their research focuses on community food and growing initiatives in Brighton & Hove, making it a great opportunity to share ideas and experiences.

Carlos is part of the DEMETRA Horizon Europe project, which explores citizen participation in local food systems, while Enrica is researching similar themes through her studies at the University of Sussex. It’s always inspiring to connect with people who share a passion for stronger, greener, community-led food systems.

A huge thank you to Jessie Gentle Medicine Brighton for leading such an inspiring herb and foraging walk for our Growing Hollingdean community. It was wonderful to explore our local green spaces together and discover the abundance of wild plants growing right on our doorstep.

Along the way we learned how to identify mugwort, plantain, St John’s wort, wild carrot, wild marjoram, rosebay willowherb, elder and mallow, and even enjoyed a few sweet wild plums straight from the tree!

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make it such a lovely evening. Events like these are a fantastic way to bring people together, share knowledge and deepen our connection with the natural world. We can’t wait for the next one! 💚

🎨 A splash of colour is coming to the entrance of Lynchet Community Garden! 🐝🐟

The alleyway entrance in Hollingdean is set to be transformed with a brand-new mural, designed by local artists Carl and David.

The two long walls will celebrate nature with:
🌸 A beautiful spring flower scene, featuring bees collecting nectar.
🐟 An underwater scene showcasing a school of mackerel.

The mural will be created on 10th & 11th July, and if you live in Clarion Housing or Lynchet Close, you’re invited to get involved! Come along and have a go at spray painting part of the mural with guidance from the artists.

We can’t wait to see this space transformed into something the whole community can enjoy. Keep an eye out for the finished artwork! 🌼🎨
