Dear Friends

Many thanks to all who started to clear our “bridleway glade” on 07 Mar. Thanks to your hard work it is looking more like a glade and less like a thicket. On 18 Apr, we will continue with this work to enhance habitat for wildflowers, butterflies and reptiles. We might also do some work on the bridleway itself which has become deeply rutted as a result of all the winter rain.

As usual:

If you plan to come, please book a slot using the following link to ensure that we have enough tools:

We’ll meet at Waterhall Clubhouse at 10.00 a.m.

If you arrive late, go to the bottom of the car-park where you'll find the bridleway which continues down the hill towards the rugby club. We'll be just off the bridleway on the left hand side ... about half way between the clubhouse and the rugby club. W3W: losses.smiled.inch

Please wear sturdy footwear and clothing appropriate for the for the weather and suitable for working with brambles and mud! I'll provide tea, coffee and chocolate biscuits. Please bring some lunch if you would like something more substantial.

We'll finish by 14.00 but there's no obligation to stay longer than you want to!

If the weather forecast is looking particularly dire, please check your e-mail or our page for updates before setting-out.

Dear Friends

As you are probably aware, due to limited staffing the dates of our volunteering days have become less predictable in recent months.

Fortunately, I now have a permanent job and a new work roster, so I can start to plan a little more effectively!

Below are the dates on which I’m planning to support Friends of Waterhall volunteering tasks for the next few months.

I will send a link for you to sign-up to each individual task approximately 2 weeks in advance of the task.

Please also note these dates could be subject to change. Late cancellations are always possible due to weather, illness and other unforeseen events … please keep an eye on your e-mail &/or the Friends of Waterhall page for updates.

Dear Friends

If you have signed-up to come to our volunteer session this Saturday, please be aware that there will be more traffic in our car park and around the Waterhall clubhouse than usual as there is an orienteering event taking place and they have booked the clubhouse.

I have been reassured by the organisers of this event that there will be enough parking spaces for you!

Just in case of any issues … there are small car parks on the Devil’s D**e and Saddlescombe Roads (between the big Hove double-roundabout and our front entrance).

There is also a larger car park by the Waterhall Playing Fields, accessible from Mill Road. If you choose to use this please be aware there’s a free council car park just before you get to Brighton Rugby Club (W3W holds.cowboy.heap) – but the Rugby Club also have their own car park further along the road for which charges apply.

A local map is here: https://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/libraries-leisure-and-arts/parks-and-green-spaces/libraries-leisure-and-arts/parks-and-green-spaces/wilding-waterhall/visiting-wilding-waterhall

If you are delayed by the congestion, you will find us working close to the bridleway which connects our clubhouse with the rugby club. W3W: losses.smiled.inch

Looking forward to seeing you!

Dear Friends

Many thanks to everyone who helped with the scrub clearance on 10 Jan. We made excellent progress and the sheltered scallops we created should be perfect for basking Adder as the sun warms up in the spring.

On 14 Feb we will be returning to our Hawthorn woodland to enhance some of the glades we created last year.

As usual:
We’ll meet at the Clubhouse at 10.00 a.m.
If you arrive late, follow the Skylark Stroll path anticlockwise from the clubhouse (see link below for map) and you’ll soon find us.

Dear Friends

Happy New Year!

In a slight change to the previously advertised plan for this coming Saturday (10 Jan), we will be working on scrub clearance, just to the East of the clubhouse. Meet at 10 a.m. at the clubhouse or if you arrive late, just walk around the clubhouse and you’ll see us.

Although the weather forecast for Saturday looks fine with a cold wind, there is a lot of rain forecast for Thursday & Friday, followed by low temperatures with a significant wind-chill. The top of the Waterhall driveway is prone to freezing, can become quite treacherous and we have no salt.

If you’re planning to attend Saturday’s volunteering session and will travel by car, you may prefer to park in one of the three car parks on the Devil’s D**e & Saddlescombe Roads (marked in light blue on the map below) or one of the car parks near Brighton Rugby Club (marked in purple on the map below). The rugby club is accessed from Mill Road. (N.B. the rugby club charge for parking in their car park, but there is a free council car park just before you get there).

You’ll need to add 10 min to your journey time to walk from these car parks to the clubhouse – just follow the paths shown on the map:

https://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2025-07/19642%20Waterhall%20panel%20v3_.pdf

(In case the link doesn't work for you - search for "Waterhall pdf")

Looking forward to seeing you if you can make it!

Mike

Dear Friends

Firstly, a big THANK YOU to everyone who braved the frequent heavy showers on 06 Dec to help us clear a large patch of encroaching bramble scrub. Rest assured, we do like bramble scrub! This is an important component of our diverse mosaic of habitats at Waterhall. However, it will be an important ongoing task for us to manage this component to prevent it from reverting to Hawthorn woodland (of which we have plenty) and to prevent our valuable chalk grassland from slowly disappearing.

Secondly, Happy Christmas to you all and another huge THANK YOU for all your work, support, camaraderie, knowledge and kind words of encouragement during 2025. We really can’t manage the landscape at Waterhall without you and we’re very proud that you enable us to do this in a way which is sustainable – with your enthusiasm and muscle-power as the main inputs!

We’d love to hear your feedback on your experience of being involved in the project during 2025. If you find yourself with a spare moment over the holidays, you can do this using the following link: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/FW57BDL It will ask you for an activity (“Wilding Waterhall Volunteering” and a date … if you can’t remember the date you last attended, just use the date when you complete the survey).

And finally, our next session will be on 10 Jan 2025.

Apologies that I keep jumping between the first and second Saturdays of the month. I do appreciate this makes it difficult for you to plan. We are a bit short-staffed at the moment and we really appreciate your understanding!

On 10 Jan, we’ll plan to clear the fence-line in the “pond paddock” so that we can repair the fence.

As usual:
We’ll meet at the Clubhouse at 10.00 a.m.

If you arrive late and don’t know where our dewpond is, give me a ring and I’ll send someone to the clubhouse to meet you!

If you plan to come, please book a free ticket using the following link so we can be sure of having enough tools for everyone: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wilding-waterhall-volunteer-task-10-jan-2026-tickets-1978117171710?aff=oddtdtcreator

Dear Friends

Many thanks to everyone who was able to join us on 01 Nov. It was a great turn-out & I really enjoyed your company. We made fantastic progress with the important work of protecting & enhancing the biodiverse area of chalk grassland on the “Anthills” slope. Soon after we cleared the encroaching scrub, the cattle returned to this area and are now busy doing their bit to keep down the grass & disrupt the sward, allowing space for a complex mix of chalk-loving herbs & flowers to thrive.

Weather-permitting our next volunteer task will be on Saturday 06 Dec.

Task to be confirmed … this will depend on the weather conditions!

As usual, please wear sturdy footwear and clothing appropriate for the for the weather and suitable for working with brambles and mud!
