A fascinating relationship beneath our feet… 🌱

Greater knapweed and knapweed broomrape have a remarkable connection. Broomrape is a parasitic plant that depends on its host for water and nutrients — but the really fascinating part happens underground.

At WFCS, we’ve planted broomrape seed alongside greater knapweed in our polytunnel. Now we wait and see whether this extraordinary relationship develops. It could take some time before we see the results.

It’s a wonderful reminder that a wildflower meadow is far more than a collection of flowers — it’s a web of interconnected life.

🌱 It’s all looking a bit sad here now… but there’s treasure in those seed heads!

As the wildflowers finish flowering, our work doesn’t stop. We’re out collecting locally sourced seed to grow the next generation of chalk grassland wildflowers. 🌼

Every tiny seed represents the possibility of another plant, another flower and another little patch of habitat for pollinators and wildlife. 💚

From seed to pot to meadow — that’s what we do at the Wildflower Conservation Society.

🍎 APPLE PRESSING DAY! 🍏

What a brilliant day in Stanmer Park! The apples were piled high, the press was working overtime and the fresh juice was flowing! 🌳🍎🥤

The Wildflower Conservation Society was delighted to be there too, selling our locally grown wildflowers and chatting to visitors about the importance of protecting and restoring our precious chalk grasslands. 🌼🦋

A wonderful autumn day of community, good food, muddy hands, beautiful plants and plenty of delicious apple juice!

Thank you to everyone who came along and supported us. ❤️

Our annual Apple Harvest Day is a way for us to promote the work we do within the Sussex community, whilst celebrating the changing seasons and natural cycles – all whilst learning about permaculture, reducing food waste and enjoying some music and scrumped c***r. It was lovely to welcome a group all the way from the Netherlands to Stanmer Park recently.🤗
Our visitors were from Planterra, a Dutch consultancy specialising in the management and maintenance of public spaces. Each year, they choose a different city to explore new ideas and bring inspiration back to their work.🌿🌱
And this year, they chose Brighton.🥳
We spent time talking about what we do here at the Conservation Society — growing local wildflowers, protecting our precious chalk grassland, and finding ways to bring more biodiversity into the places where people live, work and spend their time.🌼🌿
It was particularly interesting to hear their perspective from the Netherlands, and to realise that the challenges — and opportunities — around public spaces, biodiversity and wildflowers are shared across countries.
From our little corner of Stanmer Park, it was great to see our work inspiring people from further afield.
And who knows… perhaps some of our Brighton wildflower ideas will be making their way back to Holland!😊

YELLOW RATTLE SEEDS £2
It’s time to start sowing your yellow rattle seeds to suppress grass growth on your wildflower area next year.
We have locally sourced seeds for sale now for only £2 per 4g (Approx 1,000 seeds, cover 4m2 with light sowing)
Either collect from the WFCS polytunnel in Stanmer on Tuesday mornings (10-12) or the last Sunday of the month (1-3.30) or message or email ([email protected]) us for mail order option (postage £2).
