Another brilliant session with our future lifeguards tonight.

We kicked things off with a fully clothed swim. PJs on, jump in, Float to Live, tread water, then swim a couple of lengths. It’s a real eye-opener for the kids just how different the water feels when you’re fully clothed, but more importantly, they learn that staying calm and calling for help is the first step if they ever fall into the water unexpectedly.

Then it was time for the team challenge.

Each team had to secure their rescue equipment, build a raft, transport their “casualty” (a bucket of water!) and recover treasure from the bottom of the pool.

The winning team wasn’t the fastest. It was the team that communicated the best!

Lifeguarding isn’t just about being a strong swimmer. It’s about working together, staying calm under pressure and making good decisions as a team.

Awesome effort from everyone tonight in the lido.

Great session this morning everyone – thank you! 👏

A big moment for the club today. During the final race for the nippers, we had an all-girl Youth Water Safety Squad out in the sea supporting the younger members.

It’s fantastic to see so many dedicated young women stepping into these roles alongside the boys, building confidence, developing lifesaving skills, and helping to inspire the next generation coming through the club.

A proud moment for everyone involved, and a powerful example to our younger members that there is a place for everyone in lifesaving. 💙

At Saltdean Swim & Surf Club, Drowning Prevention Week is a reminder of why every swim, rescue drill, beach session, and lifesaving activity matters.

We’re not just teaching children how to swim. We’re helping them build the confidence, knowledge, and skills that could one day save their own life, or someone else’s.

Through our lifesaving programs, our young members learn:
🏊 Water confidence and swimming skills
🚩 How to spot hazards at the beach and in open water
🆘 What to do in an emergency
🤝 How to help safely without putting themselves at risk
💙 Respect for the water and the importance of staying safe

These lessons create safer swimmers, more confident beach users, and responsible young people who understand that water should be enjoyed safely.

For families looking to learn more about water safety and drowning prevention, the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) has a range of excellent resources and advice available:

Together, we can help ensure that everyone has the knowledge to enjoy the water safely.

Spicy. That’s probably the best word for today’s conditions!

Brighton threw plenty at our team, but wow did Saltdean show up.

With an impressive medal tally, that’s probably only half the story.

The real wins came from our squad who weren’t even sure they wanted to compete this morning. The ones battling nerves. The ones standing on the start line wondering if they could do it. The ones who dug deep when it got tough and refused to give up.

That’s what made today special.

Watching our little club take on the conditions, back each other, cheer every finish and throw everything they had into every race was something else.

We’re a small club, but today we looked mighty.

To every competitor - legend.

To every parent standing on the beach, carrying kit, shouting encouragement and making it all possible - thank you.

To our coaches and volunteers who spend countless hours getting these kids ready for days like this - this is your achievement too.

Today wasn’t just about medals.

It was about courage.
It was about grit.
It was about showing up.

And Saltdean showed up in style. 💙

Thank you Brighton Surf Life Saving Club for running an awesome comp!

It’s great to be back for our fifth season This is where it all started in 2021 and it’s great to have some of our “nippers” from back then, now helping lead our kiddos in our sessions. They were great role models for all of our kids in the pool, helping them, guiding them, supporting them and have a bit of fun too! Here’s to another great season ahead at the lido!

I’m so incredibly proud of our little club.

This morning, we spent time with our Nippers and Youth groups talking about staying safe in and around the sea. The knowledge they shared from everything they’ve learned over the years was genuinely impressive.

From checking tide times and wind direction, to identifying exit points before entering the water (“Can I actually get out here?”), understanding cold water shock, signalling for help, and knowing when and how to call the emergency services, they absolutely nailed it.

We then practised our Float to Live skills and talked about how important it is to share this knowledge with friends and family when they visit the beach or swim in open water. If we can help keep even one more person safe, it’s worth it.

The session continued with swim turns, rescue tube skills, and plenty of practice of the all-important CHUMS. We talked about how a rescue isn’t just about reaching someone in difficulty. It’s about what happens before and after too, shouting for help, assessing the situation, checking whether the casualty is with friends, and making sure everyone gets the support they need.

What makes me proudest isn’t just the skills they’re learning; it’s seeing young people grow into confident, knowledgeable water users who look out for others.

We’re incredibly lucky to have such an amazing community of children, parents, and volunteers who make this club what it is.

Thank you all. Matt ❤️🌊

It was great to actually step back and watch our nippers yesterday. It was great to see the kiddos giving it their all from the swims to entries to having fun with their mates and our volunteers jumping in where they needed to. We’ve got an awesome club, thanks to all of these amazing volunteers who help make it happen ❤️

We’ve got to do a massive shout out to lifeguard, trainer and trustee of SSSC Kevin, as he’s been working hard all week on delivering our first lifeguard course at Saltdean Lido and on the beach.

It’s a huge step forward for the club 💪🌊❤️

Here’s him with some of the crew on the course for their assessment this morning.

If you see him - give him a high five. It’s very well deserved! Thanks Kev!
