🎃🕷️ October half term at House of Culture! 🕷️🎃

Come and join us for a creative week full of fun, play, colours and imagination! Our drop-off art sessions for children aged 5+ are back this half term, with plenty of spooky, autumn-inspired making along the way 🦇🎨

Monday 26/10 – 9.00am–4.00pm
Tuesday 27/10 – 9.00am–4.00pm
Wednesday 28/10 – 9.00am–4.00pm
Thursday 29/10 – 9.00am–4.00pm

Our sessions are child-led, so every child gets the space to explore, experiment and create in their own way. Book a single day or the whole week!

🎨 Artists of Brighton - Get In Touch! 🎨

Do you have an art skill you love to share with others? Are you looking for a bright, creative space in the heart of Brighton to run your art classes or workshops?

House of Culture is opening up space for artists to run classes for adults!

We currently have availability on:

Mondays & Wednesdays
Anytime between 9am - 2pm
Up to 10 participants
One-off workshops or term blocks

At this time we can only offer our space if you already have your own audience/client base and are looking for a space to bring your classes to.

For example, you might teach:

🎨 Watercolours
🖌️ Oil painting
✏️ Drawing & illustration
🧵 Textiles
🖼️ Printmaking

Time flies — the last two weeks have absolutely disappeared. 🌀
In the week of 6–10 July we had the pleasure of hosting two brilliant students from Dorothy Stringer for their work experience. You know how the saying goes — that teenagers these days only sit on their phones and don't look further than the tip of their nose. I'm sure some do. But these two? Punctual, ready to work, independent, and completely at ease with my lack of micromanagement. They showed initiative, were happy to try things and figure them out, and had plenty of ideas about what they could teach me (social media, big time). I'm genuinely in awe of these young women and wish them every success in whatever comes next. 💫
And now, back to reality.
Schools have broken up for summer — some last week, the rest this week. We start Summer in the City 2026 at HoC on Wednesday, and we are fully booked. I'm so grateful for that, and a little anxious too, if I'm honest.
This is our third year as proud HAF providers, and this year we're running four different programmes under that umbrella. All fully booked. Thank you, once again. 🙏
As for what's actually happening at HoC over the summer — I'll tell you tomorrow. Stay tuned. 👀

☀️ SUMMER AT HOUSE OF CULTURE IS COMING ☀️
School's (almost) out, and we're ready for the chaos — the good kind. The paint-on-elbows, glitter-in-places-glitter-shouldn't-be, "look what I made!!" kind. 🎨
SUMMER IN THE CITY is back — art sessions running Monday to Friday, almost ALL summer long at our Orange Row studio. Painting, printing, clay, collage, mixed-media, 3D printing and whatever wonderful ideas the kids bring through the door. Because here, THEY lead and we follow. That's the whole point.
✨ Drop-off sessions for ages 5+ — so you get a few hours to yourself. You're welcome. 😌
✨ All abilities, all backgrounds — always
✨ All materials provided (bring the kid, we've got the rest)
✨ We accept Tax-Free Childcare, CGPS, Enjoy Benefits, Edenred vouchers & more — and yes, we're Ofsted registered
AND — we've got FOUR funded HAF programmes this summer 🙌 Free places for children receiving free school meals (HAF and SEND HAF spaces available), with a healthy meal included every session:

Did another interview and yes, you'll hear my classic "ummm... yeah... so..." soundtrack throughout 😂 No filter, no masking, this is just how my brain talks out loud — and honestly at this point I've made peace with it.
But if you push past the umms, you'll actually find out what House of Culture Brighton is and what we do — creativity for everyone, art as a right not a privilege. Kids aged 5–18, fully child-led, zero pressure for anything to look "right."
We also talk about community, because honestly that's the whole point. None of this works in isolation — it's built by and for the people around us, and that's what keeps it real.

Today's announcement. And why I'm not celebrating.
Today, Keir Starmer announced a ban on social media for under-16s. He said he was "giving children their childhoods back."
I'm not moved. I'm frustrated.
A ban is not care. A ban is a headline. A ban is a government that inherited a decade of Conservative cuts to youth services, arts education, and community spaces — and rather than reversing that damage, is now pointing at an app and saying that's the problem.
Social media didn't fill the vacuum. We created the vacuum, and then the phones filled it.
When there is nowhere for young people to go, no funded youth clubs, no affordable creative spaces, no community arts programmes — of course, young people retreat into their screens. That's not a tech problem. That's a political failure.
Earlier this year, House of Culture Brighton Community Interest Company responded formally to the Government's Growing Up in the Online World consultation. We wrote to the Prime Minister, the Secretary of State for Education, DSIT, and our three local Brighton and Hove MPs, , , and .
Our local MPs sent automated acknowledgements. And then silence.
They knew. They received it. They moved on.
The Conservatives gutted the infrastructure that young people depend on. This government has not rebuilt it. And now they want credit for banning TikTok.
Restriction without reinvestment is not protection. It is displacement.
You cannot separate online harm from the physical world in which children live. Fund the alternatives. Fund the real spaces, relationships, and creative opportunities that give young people belonging that doesn't depend on a screen.
This is a smokescreen. And our children deserve better.

✨ Colourful Resin Earring Workshop hosted by Candy✨

It’s a slow, colourful creative morning where we’ll be making fun resin earrings using glitter and tiny meaningful objects in a lovely art studio space in Central Brighton.

This session is just for adults. Small group, neurodivergent friendly space. ✨

NEW: Role Playing Games After School Club is HERE!

House of Culture Brighton & ArcFoundry are joining forces to bring you something seriously epic — a weekly RPG workshop where young adventurers aged 8+ can create, build and play.

⚔️ Create Characters — design your own hero with character sheets, HeroForge digital design, 3D printing & mini painting 🏰 Build Worlds — draw maps, craft settings, make scenery & terrain 📖 Play & Storytell — one-shot adventures, ongoing campaigns, roleplay & teamwork

We'll be playing Dungeons & Dragons, The Quiet Year, and other RPG systems — and you don't need any experience to join.
All materials provided.

The skills? Creativity. Confidence. Teamwork. Problem solving. (And probably a lot of dramatic dice rolls.)
