Read this incredible journey of Martin (name changed on request), a participant in Men in Sheds (MIS)—a project run by Fabrica gallery, one of UOK Brighton and Hove’s partners. The programme has made a significant impact on Martin’s mental health, turning isolation into community and purpose.

Before joining Men in Sheds, Martin was grappling with depression and a lack of engagement. He spent much of his time at home, struggling to exhibit his artwork. “I was not involved in anything. Spent too long on my own,” Martin reflects.

Encouraged by his health worker, Martin joined Men Who Make, which led him to Men in Sheds. The sessions became a lifeline, helping Martin come out of isolation and rebuild confidence. “It’s nice to have a purpose and a goal,” he shares. “I’m coping better with my depression, and I feel more purposeful. It’s giving me confidence about things.”

Over the last 6 weeks, Fabrica gallery Makers Studio has been hosting workshops for Wellbeing Hub members Southdown. Our brilliant shed facilitator Ishtar has been running the sessions where participants learn the basics of woodwork. They have created some beautiful items including flower presses and keepsake boxes.

One participant said: “I’ve loved this - learning a new skill and the feeling of making something from scratch. I really want to do more woodwork now!”

If your organisation would be interested in a bespoke workshop or course, do get in touch!

A few weeks back two of our amazing shedders Mark and John facilitated two “Build a birdbox” sessions for Ageing Well Festival at Fabrica gallery

Participants were invited to create a cosy home for the dwindling starling population in Brighton and Hove. Everyone came away with some beautiful creations, all painted in bird friendly paint!

Here’s what some of our participants had to say:

“I am an environmentalist and wanted a starling bird box and loved the idea of making one myself. Mark and John put on an excellent session. Friendly welcoming and informative. Lovely vibe.”

“Loved the workshop and would definitely go to another one in the future and tell other people.”

Would you be interested in attending a build a bird box workshop with Men in Sheds? Let us know!

Our Story

A Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden — a place where he feels at home and can pursue practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. Our Men’s Shed offers this to a group of such men where members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. A place of leisure where men come together to work. ‘To be able to come to the shed and work and help others gives me a great deal of satisfaction. I feel a sense of worth and love the way all the men work together.’ — Gerry, Men’s Sheds participant We are working in Kemptown, Brighton, currently based at Leach Court, Park Street and Brighton College, Eastern Road. With regular, staffed drop-in hours each week, the project aims to reduce isolation and nurture positive mental health and wellbeing in men aged 35+ and will work with several citywide partnerships to learn from and contribute to our community.

Anyone age 18+ is welcome to join the Shed, please contact our shed Facilitator, James Gasston at [email protected] or by phoning Project Manager, Clare Hankinson, at the Fabrica office on 01273 778646.
