Happy Make Music Day! 🎸

Music is where Stay Up Late began. Heavy Load were a chaotic, high-energy punk band that noticed something strange at their gigs. Just as they hit the stage, the audience would leave. Not because of the noise, but because support workers' shifts ended at 10pm, meaning any audience member who required support had to be home by 9pm.

Grown adults were missing out on gigs, nights out, friendships, and the kind of social life many of us take for granted - vital for our wellbeing, mental health, and sense of self.πŸ–•

Heavy Load did something about this. Their frustration sparked the Stay Up Late campaign in 2006, which grew into a charity in 2011, and launched Gig Buddies in 2013, which now supports thousands of people with learning disabilities to get out and live life on their own terms across seven countries.✊

Everyone deserves to stay up late and enjoy live music πŸ’›πŸ€˜

Callum is cycling from London to Paris to raise money for Stay Up Late and he needs your support! 🚴

From July 22nd to 26th, Callum will be taking on the 300-mile ride across two countries to help us match volunteers with people with learning disabilities, so they can get out and be socially active in their local community. πŸ’›

He's already smashed 84% of his Β£2,600 goal, but he needs a final push to get over the line before he gets on the bike.

Can you help him get there? Every penny counts, so please give anything you can to support - https://buff.ly/YMpRih3 πŸ™

It's Learning Disability Week! πŸ’›

We couldn't think of a better way to kick things off than by handing the mic to Jamie (Stay Up Late trustee and Gig Buddies participant) to talk about what we do and why it matters.

Stay Up Late exists to tackle isolation, challenge inaccessible support systems and nightlife, and champion the right of people with learning disabilities to have an autonomous social life on their own terms. ✊

We're throwing it back to some amazing nights out during Stay Up Late Week at the start of May πŸŽ‰

Gig Buddies projects across the country were united in staying up late and fighting for equal rights to party in their own towns and cities.

Access to an active social life is a human right. Not a luxury. πŸ’›πŸ€˜

Happy Volunteers' Week pt. 3! πŸŽ‰

To close out our volunteer celebrations, we're handing over to Chi - a Sports Buddies volunteer who captured these photos on a recent morning walk through the park with his Sports Buddy.

"We spend an hour walking through the park, chatting about various topics in life, from religion and nature to oriental cultures. We share our life stories too. I feel our bond is being built gradually with every experience we share.

If I could summarise my volunteering experience as a Sports Buddy, it would be: share stories, connect minds, and flourish our life together."

Happy Volunteers' Week pt. 2! πŸŽ‰

Meet Elliot, who has been volunteering as a Gig Buddy for eight months - matched with buddy Isaac.

We asked Elliot a few questions about his experience so far...

Why did you want to volunteer?
"I was really keen to contribute to the local community in some way. To meet new people, learn new things and do things I've never done before. All of which I've definitely already achieved."

Did you have any worries?
"I was definitely nervous. Would I be good at it? Would my Gig Buddy like me? Would we have a good time going to gigs? Thankfully my nerves very quickly dissipated. My Gig Buddy and his family are so wonderful and positive."

What's been the highlight?
"Seeing Isaac with a massive grin, dancing all night at the last gig we went to."

And if someone was thinking about volunteering but wasn't sure?
"Do it! You'll have so much support and hopefully have some great new experiences." πŸ’›πŸ€˜
