Mothers Uncovered

Mothers Uncovered Mothers Uncovered is an award-winning project for the Livestock charity. We run low cost creative peer support groups for mothers, led by past participants.

Founded 2008. Support our campaign here for better maternal care. www.change.org/SupportMatrescence. Matrescence means the process of becoming a mother. Like adolescence, it is a time of new identity, bodily changes and hormonal fluctuations, yet we don't honour this time or look after mothers properly. Mothers Uncovered helps women at ALL stages of motherhood to reconnect with the women they’ve a

lways been. If you feel your life as a mother is a rollercoaster, with blissful highs and overwhelming lows and some mum and baby groups offer no opportunity to discuss real issues, then Mothers Uncovered is for you. We run a range of groups and events across Sussex and online nationally and are looking to expand. Our sessions are warm, welcoming, non judgemental spaces, involving facilitated discussion and arts activities. Our peer supporters who lead the groups are all past participants. They are not perfect mothers. They certainly don’t want to tell you how to be mothers. They are going through it all too. Participant feedback

A truly valuable experience which pulled me from the brink of post natal depression. Considerate & understanding facilitators. Thank you all so much.”
‘Mothers Uncovered fills a gap you didn’t even know was there.’

‘It’s always the mums who pick up the pieces’, said Charlotte Buxton, featured in this article from The Guardian.
With dramatic world events, from pandemics, climate catastrophes to war, families, especially low income families, bear the brunt. And it’s often the who shoulder the hardest impact.

This week brings the report into the maternity crisis in Nottingham and the Baroness Amos Care Review.
People throw their hands up and say it’s awful and must change, but WHEN will it? Mothers, fathers, campaigners, journalists and researchers have been highlighting the inadequate care for years.
We run small peer-led sessions in Brighton and Shoreham where mothers can share their story and start to process their trauma. We introduced them four years ago when we noticed the increase in mothers still traumatised months after their births.
The feedback is from Beatrice Ramunno after one of our sessions.

On the Secret Life of Mothers Maggie Gordon-Walker speaks to the fabulous Audra Phelps about her experiences being raised in the LDS Church, more popularly known as the Mormon. She raised three children while still in the church, but her doubts were growing, as were periods of depression. She is now committed to helping other mothers deal with their complex relationship with high demand religions.

When you’re at the coal face of parenting, each day can feel very long and exhausting, when you’re juggling working, childcare and your own needs (the last of which often gets neglected).
I remember seething if anyone said something like ‘enjoy it, it goes so fast’ when I was in that phase, because I was completely exhausted.
It’s vital that children ask questions to help them learn about the world and relationships to aid them become a helpful member of the family and community.
The lack of support for families, the pressures of a rigid school system and financial anxieties put stress on mothers and children and interfere with the process of questioning the world.

I’m glad that there is more coverage of the scandalous amount of birth trauma that women are going through, putting them and their babies at risk and placing strain on the families. We hear stories like this all the time , with many feeling they shouldn’t talk about it because ‘all that matters’ is they’ve got their baby.
But it does matter.
There are several brilliant organisations highlighting birth trauma, including and individuals such as Maternity Advisor to Parliament, and
We see the women that birth trauma has harmed and our account raises awareness of matrescence, the lifelong process of becoming a mother.
