Brighton & Hove Progressive Synagogue We are committed to Liberal Judaism, which cherishes and honours our Jewish heritage in the light of contemporary insights

BHPS has been in Brighton and Hove since 1935. We are an inclusive community where all members – children, women and men – play an equal role in communal life. Our members and Friends come from diverse backgrounds which makes for a very open and varied community. We are committed to Liberal Judaism, which cherishes and honours our Jewish heritage in the light of contemporary insights. Liberal Judaism values both tradition and reason, as it values truth, sincerity, and above all, human needs. Liberal Judaism is committed to an ethics-led view of what it means to be Jewish, and is therefore dedicated to full equality, integration and participation in every sphere of religious and civic life.

THIS Sunday 4 October. 🟡

Remembering 7 October: For All We Lost will bring our communities together in person and online to remember those who were murdered, those taken hostage, and all those whose lives were changed forever that day.

The Memorial Service will take place in London on Sunday 4 October from 5pm. It is open to everyone and we warmly encourage you to join us.

We will be joined by Rabbi Yael Vurgan, Regional Rabbi for the Sha’ar HaNegev Regional Council, who supported communities close to the Gaza border directly affected by the terrorist attacks of 7 October 2023.

This November, stand with AJEX.

Join veterans, serving personnel, cadets, families and the wider Jewish community as we march together at the AJEX Annual Remembrance Parade and Ceremony at the Cenotaph.

Remembering the past. Honouring service. Building the future.

At a time of rising antisemitism, it has never been more important to stand together, honour the generations who fought for our freedoms and show that we are British. Jewish. Proud.

For those keeping the full Yom Kippur fast this year, it will begin tonight at 18:49 and end tomorrow at 19:48.

Of course, Jewish tradition is clear that we should not fast where doing so may harm our health. Yom Kippur is not a test of endurance, nor is its meaning measured to the minute. All of us are encouraged to reflect on teshuva (the concept of repentance, return and new beginnings) in our own way.

If you are unable to fast, you may find this prayer and meditation helpful:https://progressivejudaism.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/A-LITURGY-FOR-THOSE-UNABLE-TO-FAST-ON-YOM-KIPPUR.pdf
