Sussex Nightstop A community response to youth homelessness; hosting young people in the homes of volunteers while our service partners find suitable accommodation.

Sussex Nightstop coordinates a network of volunteers who provide safe, inclusive, and non-judgmental places to stay for young people aged 16-25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

For those sofa-surfing, rough sleeping, leaving an unsafe home, or facing homelessness, Sussex Nightstop is there to provide a safety net. Volunteer hosts open their homes for safe overnight stays, while we p

rovides guidance and support to help young people secure stable, long-term accommodation.

Sussex Nightstop welcomes individuals from all backgrounds, faiths, and identities, tailoring its support to meet each person’s needs wherever possible.

While young people have a safe place to rest, our support coordinator connects them with local services, including housing advisors, to help them find suitable accommodation. An on-call service is also available to assist both guests and hosts.

For young people experiencing homelessness, being welcomed into a stranger's home can be a powerful reminder that they are not alone.

At Sussex Nightstop, volunteer hosts provide a safe place to stay during a housing crisis, helping young people access stability and support when they need it most.

Opening your home to support a young person can feel like a big step.
For many people, the biggest obstacle isn't willingness to help. It's simply not knowing enough about what hosting involves.

People choose to become Nightstop hosts for lots of reasons. For many, it's simply about offering a safe place to stay during a difficult time.

Our volunteer hosts provide emergency accommodation for young people aged 16-25 who are experiencing homelessness or are unsafe where they are staying. Alongside a safe place to sleep, hosts offer kindness, reassurance and a warm welcome.

No young person should have to navigate homelessness while trying to build their future.

The transition to adulthood comes with enough challenges without worrying about where you'll sleep that night.

Yet many young people facing homelessness are doing exactly that. Many young people experiencing homelessness aren't visible on the streets. They may be sofa surfing, moving between temporary arrangements, or staying somewhere unsafe because they feel they have no other option.

Understanding their experiences is the first step towards creating services and support that truly meet their needs.

They talk about feeling welcomed, listened to and supported during a difficult time.

Every four minutes - that's how often a young person became homeless or was at risk of homelessness in the UK during 2024/25.

Many people imagine homelessness as sleeping rough, but for young people it is often hidden. It can mean sofa surfing, staying temporarily with friends or family, or living somewhere that doesn't feel safe.

At Sussex Nightstop, we provide emergency accommodation and support for young people aged 16–25 who are experiencing homelessness or are unsafe where they are staying.

We're also the only same-day service in Brighton & Hove able to provide safe emergency accommodation on the night a young person needs it.

When does homelessness start?

Many people think homelessness begins when someone sleeps rough.
But for many young people, it starts much earlier.

It can start when:
🏠 home no longer feels safe
🛋️ they're moving from sofa to sofa
📍 they're relying on temporary places to stay
❓ they don't know where they'll sleep next week

This is known as hidden homelessness.

From the outside, everything may appear normal. A young person might still be studying, working, seeing friends or posting on social media. But behind the scenes, they may be living with uncertainty, instability and stress. Young people experiencing homelessness often don't recognise themselves as homeless and may not seek support until they reach crisis point.

At Sussex Nightstop, we provide emergency accommodation and support to young people aged 16–25 who are experiencing homelessness or are unsafe where they are staying, helping bridge the gap while longer-term housing solutions are found.

Because homelessness doesn't always look the way people expect it to.

The Power of Love starts with belonging.

Brighton Pride 2026 celebrates The Power of Love - the strength of community, solidarity and acceptance.

The ATK research found that LGBTQ+ young people are more than twice as likely to experience homelessness than their non-LGBTQ+ peers. Trans and non-binary young people face particularly high risks.

Behind every statistic is a young person who deserves safety, dignity and somewhere they can be themselves.

At Sussex Nightstop, our volunteer hosts provide emergency accommodation and practical support to young people facing homelessness or housing crisis.
