At the Community Kitchen, we support families to build kitchen confidence and enjoy nutritious, delicious, and budget-friendly meals. ⭐

As part of that mission, we’ve spent the last five years hosting primary school children from across Brighton & Hove for a fun, hands-on cooking course. The transformation over each three weeks course is incredible. 👨‍🍳👩‍🍳

On day one, many children have never cooked before and turn their noses up at anything green. By the end, they are confidently making recipes from scratch, eagerly trying new veggies, and safely handling knives and hot pans.🍳

“When our Year Five children… cook with the Community Kitchen team, they’re not just learning recipes and important life skills— they’re discovering confidence, teamwork and the joy of creating something that brings the class together.”- Class Teacher

We had a great time visiting and essentials store recently. We ran two hands on cookery workshop making delicious "no cook" recipes for people to take home with them. As well as signposting people to join our community cookery classes and giving out easy to use recipe booklets. 🍜

“I’m really bad at following recipes, but Id like to be better and this was so simple.”- participant

We made our "just add hot water" noodle pots with delicious veggies and overnight oats. They went down a treat and were delicious, cheap & nutritious alternatives to ready made store bought versions. ⭐

“I struggle with food textures, this is a great way for me to try overnight oats, something I have wanted to make but was concerned I would find the texture difficult”- participant

These sessions were run on behalf of the Community Kitchen charity – thanks to our funders

This East Asian inspired slaw we made in our Dementia Friendly Cookery class this week is perfect for your bank holiday BBQ. ☀️

Serves: 4

INGREDIENTS ⭐️
1/2 red or white cabbage
2 spring onions
1 tsp salt
1 carrot
1/2 red pepper

Small bunch of coriander
Juice of 1/2 a lime
1/2 tbsp of sesame oil
Salt and pepper
Sesame seeds

Method:
Shred or slice the cabbage as thinly as possible. slice the spring onion thinly.

Put in a large bowl and sprinkle with 1 tsp of salt.

If you have time, leave for half an hour, as this allows the cabbage to soften slightly.

Peel and grate the carrot. Chop the red pepper into very thin slices. Combine with the cabbage and onion in the bowl.

Chop the coriander. Mix the coriander, lime juice & sesame oil, with the chopped veggies. Add salt and pepper to suit your taste, adding a small amount at a time.

Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
