Regency Society of Brighton and Hove

Regency Society of Brighton and Hove The Regency Society is the oldest amenity and conservation society in Brighton and Hove and a registered charity. www.regencysociety.org

In the wake of World War II, Britain was swept by a desire to modernise – and Brunswick Square, Brunswick Terrace and Adelaide Crescent were destined to be replaced by high-rise blocks until a group of passionate conservationists stepped in. They became the Regency Society of Brighton and Hove and helped to win the argument that we should treasure and preserve the best of our past. One of our roles is to campaign for equally high standards when new development is mooted.

The Regency Society is proud to have made a contribution of £10,000 to the restoration of the Madeira Arches, thus encouraging other bodies such as Historic England to invest even more at a later date. Madeira Terrace on Brighton seafront is being restored! ✨

We've awarded a further £240,000 towards the restoration of the extraordinary Madeira Terrace on Brighton seafront.

The Grade II* listed Victorian landmark is thought to be the longest continuous cast-iron structure in Britain and possibly the world.

It has 151 ornate arches and bays stretching an impressive 865 metres.

Our grant will contribute to testing and reusing as much of the original cast iron as possible.

Brighton & Hove City Council is leading the multimillion-pound project, which will see the restoration of the first 28 of the oldest arches and bays and the installation of a new, fully accessible lift.

Added to our £750,000 grant in 2024, public funding now totals almost £1 million.
