At Money Advice Plus we can't believe it's May already, but April brought some good news that we wanted to share on a Friday afternoon 💫
Firstly, in April, the government announced important changes to make council tax debt collection less aggressive ✔️ It used to be the case that if you missed a single council tax payment, after just three weeks your council could demand that you had to pay your full annual bill – so up to 12 times more than the original debt. Some councils would then change an extra £150 on top of this if you couldn't pay your bill. From next April, people will be given two months between missing a payment and having to pay their full bill, which we know will make a big difference to many people.
Secondly, we have had our financial outcomes for clients back - and we are overwhelmed with the impact we have had over the past year! 🤩
The total gains for all our clients in 25/26 is £9,397,463 – an average of £2,790 for each client in the year.
This includes:
* £3,063,447 in benefit income
* £6,256,191 in one-off payments
* £3,141,272 in ongoing payments
* Debt relief of £5,748,423 (write offs, and Debt Relief orders, IVAs etc)
This includes £2,743,702 for victim-survivors of economic abuse, £308,772 of which was through our pioneering Economic Abuse Evidence Form, now being piloted by major financial institutions.
In addition to these gains we helped people manage debts totalling £7,875,416 and arranged rent arrears repayments of £56,316 per year.
We want to thank everyone in our wonderful team who work so hard on behalf of our clients, and our clients for trusting our service to help them 💛
We are feeling very proud of the life-changing outcomes we have, and as well as the figures we have client feedback like this that means everything to us:
"We were in serious debt for quite a while and yes we were struggling but we had help from you and we have we started our life and it's all because of you and your team"
Wishing everyone a very happy Bank Holiday weekend.
