Happy Sussex Day (for yesterday!) 💚

We love this county and are proud to celebrate it in so many ways. From restoring landscapes through tree planting and tending events to preserving and sharing Sussex’s heritage, culture and traditions through our creative projects, our work is all about connecting people with place.

Working alongside local communities, volunteers and partner organisations, we’re helping nurture a culture of nature restoration while celebrating everything that makes Sussex special.

We’re grateful to be part of a vibrant movement of organisations, landowners, artists, ecologists and volunteers working to restore and protect Sussex for future generations.

Here’s to Sussex and all those helping it thrive. 🌳

Last week, our founder Nicoleta Carpineanu aka Nico de Transilvania was honoured to represent our work at a symposium celebrating Romanian cultural heritage at Château de Rixensart in Belgium, hosted by the Romanian Embassy in Belgium, the Romanian Cultural Institute in Brussels ICR Bruxelles and the Mérode family.

Nico shared our work in Romania’s Carpathian Mountains, including Interbeing and Be One, projects inspired by and recorded in the region that use music, art and storytelling to deepen connections between people and nature. She also spoke about our work in Bulgaria, including Wings Over Mountains, a music and film project celebrating the landscapes, wildlife and cultural heritage of the Eastern Rhodope Mountains.

The symposium provided an opportunity to connect with the Romanian and Bulgarian Ambassadors, learn about the Mérode family’s work protecting and restoring 110 hectares of biodiverse forest, and meet others dedicated to safeguarding cultural and natural heritage. These conversations reinforced a belief at the heart of Forests Without Frontiers’ work: restoring landscapes is inseparable from preserving the traditions, stories and communities that help protect them.

As part of the event, Nico was presented with a certificate in recognition for her work to date.

“I feel honoured to receive this recognition on behalf of the artists, musicians and collaborators who make our projects possible. Thank you to the Romanian Embassy in Belgium and Princes of Mérode for the invitation and acknowledgement of our work.”

Thank you to everyone who made this inspiring gathering possible.

We’re happy to share that the trees we planted this spring at Westerlands, in partnership with Weald to Waves, the South Downs National Park and everyone who joined us on the planting days, are growing well.

Despite periods of hot weather across England, the combination of sunshine and rainfall has helped the young trees establish, and it’s wonderful to see them thriving in the enclosure.

This week, Nico de Transilvania spent several days at Westerlands working on preparations for a new nature recording project, which we’ll be sharing more about in the coming months. While on site, she checked on the trees and explored further opportunities to develop our partnership with Westerlands, including potential areas for future tree planting.

We’re excited to see this collaboration continue to grow and are already looking ahead to upcoming tree-tending events. Look out for more information coming soon.

After more than 70 years, griffon vultures have returned to the Făgăraș Mountains through a reintroduction project led by our partners at Foundation Conservation Carpathia.

We’ve spent many years learning about these remarkable birds through our Wings Over Mountains project in Bulgaria, delivered in partnership with the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) Българско дружество за защита на птиците BirdLife Bulgaria. Through that work, we’ve seen first-hand the important role vultures play in supporting healthy ecosystems and thriving wildlife, making it especially exciting to see them taking their first steps towards a return to Romania’s skies.

A historic moment for nature restoration and biodiversity in the Carpathians.

Join us in Brussels on 6–7 June at Château de Rixensart for a unique cultural gathering where the Romanian traditional embroidered blouse becomes a symbol of dialogue between heritage, unity and contemporary creativity.

We’re honoured to present Wings Over Mountains, a music, film and landscape project celebrating the beauty and spirit of the Eastern Rhodope Mountains in Bulgaria through traditional song, contemporary composition and visual storytelling. Created by Nico de Transilvania in collaboration with musicians, choirs wearing their symbolic blouses, and conservation partners Българско дружество за защита на птиците BirdLife Bulgaria, the project aims to deepen connections between culture and nature while raising awareness for the vital conservation work taking place in the region.

Invited by the Romanian Ambassador, Nico de Transilvania will present the Wings Over Mountains film in the presence of the Bulgarian and Romanian Ambassadors, alongside a DJ set inspired by the traditional elements and stories carried within the Romanian blouse as part of the slow fashion show.

We look forward to sharing this celebration of culture, music, craftsmanship and connection through landscape and tradition.

Since we started planting in 2020 in Romania’s Făgăraș Mountains, it has been inspiring to witness the growth of these forests over time 🌲

During our recent trip, we visited some of the original planting sites, a powerful reminder of what long-term restoration and collective action can achieve.

Thank you to our partners Foundation Conservation Carpathia for their work and continued dedication to restoring and protecting these landscapes.

Every season reminds us that restoration takes time, care and collaboration and it is truly inspiring to see these forests growing.

Last bank holiday, as part of the ROSA Botanical Artfair, we gathered in the gardens at West Dean for an afternoon of storytelling, deep listening and immersive performance.

The event began with a Listening to Nature experience led by Forests Without Frontiers founder Nico de Transilvania inviting us to slow down and tune into the landscape through sound. Using hydrophones and microphones, we listened to the hidden world beneath the water, alongside sounds from roots and the soil itself, the movement, textures and subtle rhythms of life that usually go unheard.

We were then joined by violinist Nuala Nova and performer Florencia Leon for a beautiful and deeply atmospheric performance inspired by the fox, beaver and mouse, with handcrafted masks created by John Moore. Music, movement and nature together, merging into a shared enchanted space.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make it such a special and beautiful gathering.

An update from Wales 🌱

The 1,000 native trees planted last winter through the collaboration between Forests Without Frontiers and Forest of Dreams are growing well and beginning to establish across this scientifically important site in Wales.

With guidance from the The Woodland Trust, the planting work helps to extend wildlife corridors and strengthen habitats in an area where natural regeneration has been challenging. It’s encouraging to see the young trees taking root and supporting a more resilient landscape for both people and wildlife.

We’re pleased to share that we’ll be continuing to support this work again this year and look forward to building on the progress already taking shape.

Thank you to everyone involved, and to our supporters and donors who make this regeneration possible 🌿

A recent visit to the tree nursery in the Făgăraș Mountains in Romania, gave us the chance to spend more time with the team at Foundation and learn about the many stages involved before tree planting begins.

Joined by Ion and the FCC team, we helped move young saplings into storage ready for the planting teams.

For the first time in the seven years we’ve supported planting in Romania, we visited the nursery itself with Flavius and saw rows of one-year-old saplings grown from locally collected seeds. Alongside Beech, the nursery also grows Fir, Rowan, Mountain Maple and Spruce.

We also visited the Beaver House, an inspiring educational centre sharing the importance of beavers within the ecosystem. 🌲

This spring, we were back in Romania’s beautiful Făgăraș Mountains to plant a further 5000 trees, in partnership with Foundation Conservation Carpathia. It was a truly inspiring trip and we’ve learned so much about the hard work that happens there, but also the challenges of nature restoration.

Together, we planted native Beech, Fir and Spruce saplings to help restore biodiverse mountain landscapes and support long-term forest resilience in the Carpathians.

Every tree planted is part of a wider vision, restoring habitats, protecting wildlife and reconnecting people with nature through collective action.

A special thank you to everyone who planted trees with us, to all the workers on the ground and to everyone supporting and making this work possible.

We are delighted that we’ll be back in Autumn to continue our work here, if you would like to support us all donations make a real difference.https://www.forestswithoutfrontiers.org/support-us
