How many cigarette butts can you pick up in 15 minutes? That was the challenge set by Melanie from The Green Centre Brighton, when Goodgym Brighton and Active Sussex teamed up at The Level last week.
Despite the heavens opening, everyone got stuck in, and in just a quarter of an hour, each volunteer collected between 75g and 100g of cigarette butts.
Cigarette butts are the UK's biggest litter problem, with an estimated 2.4 million on England's high streets at any one time. Every one we picked up is a small win for Keep Britain Tidy's Cigarette Butts Are Rubbish campaign.
By the end of the session, we'd cleared 14.54kg of litter from the park:
♻️ 5.02kg of glass (recycled)
♻️ 1.29kg of plastic (recycled)
♻️ 0.86kg of aluminum cans (recycled)
⚡ 7.37kg of general waste, including 1.25kg of cigarette butts (sent for energy recovery).
Since signing our Environmental Sustainability Commitment, we've been working to embed greener practices into how we operate and to champion better access to quality green and blue spaces across Sussex. Days like this are a chance to put that into practice. Clean, safe, welcoming parks make it easier for everyone to get outside and be active. 🌿
A huge thank you to GoodGym Brighton and The Green Centre Brighton for having us. We'll be back!
