Blagss Social group and sports society for LGBT members and friends in the Brighton & Hove area. Occasional social events are set up across the entire membership.

BLAGSS is a sports and social group that now has around 500 LGBT members and friends from across Brighton and Hove, Sussex and beyond. Although its aim is to bring LGBT members together to enjoy different sports and social events, sexual orientation is not important, and anybody can join as long as you are open-minded and non-judgemental. Our members are all different shapes, sizes, ages and abili

ties, and participate in sports as varied as Badminton, Cycling, Football, Golf, Petanque-Boules, Rock Climbing, Running, Sailing, Skiing, Squash, Table Tennis, Tennis, Ten-Pin Bowling and Walking. We always welcome new ideas and help to start up new groups, and try our best to make the choices more varied and accessible. With around 700 different sporting and social meetings each year, BLAGSS is the area's largest not-for-profit organisation of its kind. It operates as an umbrella group for various specific sport sub-groups that co-ordinate their own activities. BLAGSS is a great way to meet people, keep fit, and have fun. Included with your membership, you can have discounts at certain local retailers in Brighton & Hove. You just have to show your membership card. For more information and to join, please visit our website.

Fancy a walk in the fresh summer air amongst some of the best scenery Sussex has to offer?

BLAGSS has a walking group!

The Walking section is a friendly, mixed group.

Thanks to our wonderful volunteer walk leaders, we are currently offering a wide range of group walks, and any BLAGSS member with the appropriate level of fitness is welcome on any walk.

Many of our walks are accessible on foot, by bike or by public transport from Brighton, and do not require the use of cars.

Hello Pétanque enthusiasts and newcomers alike, the 2026 Pétanque Season is finally upon us!

Whether you're a seasoned pro or a curious newbie, we invite you to join us for our free Taster Session.

📅 Date & Time: Sunday 3rd May, 11.30am to 1pm.

📍 Location: Pétanque Court, Seafront, BN3 2WN, by the Peace Statue and next to The Meeting Place Cafe.

All are welcome! No experience necessary - our group will be on hand to explain the rules of the game and impart whatever skills and wisdom we may or may not have. If you have any boules, please bring them, but absolutely no worries if not – we'll have plenty of spares on hand for you to borrow.

Bring your friends, and join us for fun, sun (fingers crossed), and friendly competition!

Regular Thursday Evening Sessions

The introductory session is the perfect opportunity to sample what BLAGGS Pétanque has to offer and to meet our friendly group, but if you are unable to make this taster session just turn up to a Thursday evening session.

Our regular Thursday evening sessions will commence on 7th May at 6pm for a 6.15 start. We welcome all potential BLAGSS members of all abilities.

📍 Location: The Pétanque court is one of the best spots in town – right on the seafront, by the iconic Peace Statue and next to The Meeting Place Cafe, which has had a successful makeover.

🌊 Beach Bliss: As the weather heats up, some of us lucky souls with flexible schedules might even sneak in a refreshing dip before 6pm. Meet on the beach just down from the Meeting Place café.

🍹 Post-Game Hangout: After playing as many games as you’re in the mood for, it’s great to relax on the beach with drinks and snacks. Whenever we’re not lucky with the weather – The Bedford Tavern, just a stone's throw away, is our backup plan, offering a cozy and welcoming atmosphere.

🌟 Year-Round Fun: Whilst the Pétanque season officially runs from May to October when the darker nights set in, there’s always the opportunity to have ad hoc Sunday midday sessions throughout the year. Just shout if you fancy a game!

The new season of Tennis Virgins is due to start on Thursday 7th May.

The BLAGSS website provides all the relevant information but in short;

- if you have played previously and are rusty or need some confidence in your skills.
- if you have raquet skills but never tried tennis
- if you are available at 7:15-8:15 on a Thursday.
- if you want to be coached by an excellent tennis coach
- if you want to meet some lovely likeminded people

Then Tennis Virgins is for you!!

Coaching is provided by Keelan Oakley a professional tennis coach who also coaches the BLAGSS Intermediate group. 4 courts are available for up to 16 players.

Ever wanted to learn how to bowl or improve how you do it?

BOOK EARLY TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT

We have liaised with the East Sussex Ten Pin Bowling Association for 3 coaches (2 of whom are international coaches) + 2 assistants to come to Brighton Marina Hollywood Bowl on Wednesday 25 March with sessions starting at 5.30, 6.30 and 7.30. Players of any ability are welcome as they have said they will tutor all standards, and are likely to spend more time with less experienced players.

Following their recommendation we propose that lanes be booked as pairs of people and each coach / assistant will cover 2 lanes simultaneously so we can have up to 20 people on ten lanes for each of three sessions. Potentially numbers may get restricted by availability of lanes so book early.

We have picked the 25 March as Hollywood Bowl has a promotional offer of £10 for 2 games plus a drink (our normal rate is £13.86 for 2 games alone). Players will pay this lane fee. A fixed donation is being made to the Association and a BLAGSS grant for that has been requested to cover that.

I have opened it up so you can bring guests. Feel free to bring along friends who are not current BLAGSS members but may wish to join later.

For those interested please sign up on the website and I will be in touch re booking lanes etc.

We are also liaising with the Association about their membership - an annual subscription of £15 includes three training sessions. The trainers are based in Crawley, but if there is sufficient interest they are likely to hold the sessions in Brighton. If interested let me know via [email protected].
