Announcement! Rescheduling the open day for Sat 27th June - please save the date and join us ❀️ πŸƒ πŸ• 🌞 πŸ¦‹ We have taken the decision to postpone tomorrow’s event at Bevendean Community Garden I’m afraid - as the rain and wind speeds (40mph!) are not looking good for us to be able to relax and enjoy the garden / even have shelters up! Apologies for any disappointment and hope to see you on 27th June.

International Dawn Chorus Day is 3 May. Here's some tips on how to enjoy the morning from the RSPB.

What is the dawn chorus?
The dawn chorus is the symphony of song performed by birds looking for love, and to defend their patch. In spring, as the days lengthen, wildlife starts to think about the need to breed. For many male birds, this means belting out the well-worn but wonderful classics to try and attract females.

Some species sing throughout the day, but it’s at dawn, as the morning light begins to break, that many different birds join together to perform.

'Lower Bevendean Farm was full of activity, farmers grew crops like wheat, barley, potatoes and Mangold'

If you're curious what a Mangold is..

What is a Mangold Root Vegetable?
Mangel-wurzel (mangelwurzel) is also referred to as mangold-wurzel or simply mangold and hails from Germany. The word β€˜mangold’ means β€œbeet” and β€˜wurzel’ means β€œroot,” which is exactly what mangold vegetables are. They are often confused with turnips or even β€œSwedes,” the British term for rutabagas, but are, in fact, related to the sugar beet and the red beet. They tend to be larger than regular beets, however, and reddish yellow in color. Mangold root vegetables were primarily grown for animal fodder during the 18th century.
