However, new research shows that people place less importance on numeracy than literacy when using AI:

☀️ Today marks the Summer Solstice – the longest day of the year.

It's also a great reminder that numbers help us understand the world around us.

- The Earth's axis is tilted by approximately 23.44°, creating the seasons and the solstices.

- In London, daylight lasts around 16 hours and 38 minutes today, while in Edinburgh it's closer to 17 hours and 37 minutes.

- And more than 4,500 years ago, the builders of Stonehenge aligned the monument with the summer solstice sunrise.

From measuring time and distance to tracking the movement of our planet, maths helps us make sense of extraordinary natural events.

To everyone who’s finishing up their exams this week, CONGRATULATIONS!

For lots of us, maths exams are tough mentally AND emotionally.

Remember that the numbers that matter in daily life don’t exist in an exam hall; they help you find good deals and make good decisions, they help you plan travel and organise your day. Whatever the outcome of your GCSEs or National 5s, these exams don’t have to define your relationship with numbers.

Enjoy a well-earned break 😎

⚽📊 The World Cup is delivering plenty of memorable numbers already!

Scotland has scored their first World Cup goal in 28 years.

Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick to equal the highest World Cup goals scored by any player.

And today, England begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia.

From goals and group standings to records and probabilities, football is full of numbers that help tell the story of the game.

What’s the most interesting World Cup statistic you've seen so far? 👇

Well done to Ellie for persevering with this recording, we enjoyed the bloopers 🤭

While dyscalculia is classed more as a learning difficulty than a learning disability, we know that learning differences can be linked and that it’s important to raise awareness of the full spectrum of learning needs.

With understanding of dyscalculia still a long way behind dyslexia, we want to raise awareness of struggles with numbers so that more children and adults can get the right support!

Numbers are essential at the World Cup ⚽🏆

Ticket prices aside (!) there are plenty of ways numbers will affect the tournament: Playing in temperatures around 30°C, with some games at 7,200ft above sea level will mean up to 4L of fluid loss for some players. All this affects performance and tactics, and is why there will be a 3-minute hydration breaks each half💧

Numbers are always in play and having good numeracy gives you a better handle on what's happening. AND we've got a football-themed version of the National Numeracy Challenge to help you brush up your skills.

⚡ Is it just us, or has the weather been a little dramatic this week?

With thunderstorms forecast today, why not try this simple bit of everyday maths the next time you see lightning?

⛈️ Count the seconds between the flash of lightning and the sound of thunder.

➗ Divide by 5 to estimate how far away the lightning is in miles.

➗ Divide by 3 to estimate the distance in kilometres.

Because light travels almost instantly, the delay comes from the speed of sound travelling through the air.

Did you know?

⚡ The electrical potential between a cloud and the ground can reach up to 1 billion volts.

🌡️ The air around a lightning strike can heat up to around 30,000 Kelvin – about five times hotter than the surface of the Sun!

Let us know if you spot any storms today!
