IDAHOBIT 2026 - Brighton & Hove

On Sunday 17 May at 1.30pm, local LGBTQ+ communities, allies and supporters will come together outside Brighton Unitarian Church on New Road to mark IDAHOBIT - the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

This year’s global theme is “At the heart of democracy”, a reminder that LGBTQ+ equality, safety and dignity are not separate from democracy. They are part of what democracy must protect.

The afternoon will bring together community speakers, live music and performance, with contributions from Rainbow Chorus, Brighton Gay Men's Chorus, and Drum and Blaze, who will also lead a “Minute of Noise”. Bring something you can use to make noise, raise your voice and be heard together.

After the gathering, the event will continue at The Ledward Centre from 2.30pm to 5pm, with entrance via the side of Jubilee Library. There will be a safe, supportive space to connect and share food, with a lunch buffet provided by Lunch Positive.

Everyone is welcome: LGBTQ+ people, allies and anyone who wants to stand against homophobia, transphobia and biphobia.

This time last week we took to the stage to celebrate heroes of q***r life, belting out Bowie 👨‍🎤, feelin a bit of Freddie 👨🏻, and moving like Madonna 💃.

But who is the ultimate musical hero for the g**s and the theys? State your case in the comments.

(Thanks as always to one of our own, Nick Ford Photography, for the snaps)

Heroes is on Tour! 🦸‍♂️🚐

If you want to hear some of the fabulous music from our Fringe show, where we celebrated some of the amazing artists who inspired us, join is in Cuckfield on Sat 30th May!

Despite receiving some homophobic hate online, we were really moved by Holy Trinity Cuckfield's strong message of support for LGBT rights in response, along with many of the good folks of Cuckfield. ❤

Duncan Lustig-Prean was one of our inspiring Heroes, who you may have missed if you came on Friday night's show. If you did have the pleasure of hearing him speak on Saturday, you'll know we only heard part of his tale.

To hear the full story, and for the chance to ask your own questions, Duncan has his own Fringe show this weekend, on Fri 8th and Sat 9th at the Lantern Theatre Brighton. We'll be going on the Friday - so hopefully may see some of you there!

If you attended Heroes this weekend, you might have noticed our music team has grown! We are thrilled to announce that Joshua Winstone has taken on the role of Assistant Director with the chorus.

Josh is a musical theatre pianist from Brighton. He trained as an orchestra conductor, winning the Prima Vista award for sight-reading. His career spans from West End work (The London Palladium), to international stages. As a pianist he has played on a number of productions, including Dr Zhivago (Cadogan Hall) and Collabro’s 2019 Japan Tour.

Josh now works as a lecturer on a number of Musical Theatre degree programmes, where he enjoys passing on his knowledge to the next generation of performers - and now to our very own members!

Despite having been with the chorus for only a few weeks, Josh has already taken to the stage, deftly guiding us on some of our favourite songs in Heroes. Joining our already-stellar Music Team of Joe Paxton and Tim Nail, we can't wait to see what Josh brings to the chorus over the years to come!

This show really meant a lot to the chorus, and we are so grateful to our amazing Heroes - Sarah, Gail, Duncan and Sheena - for all helping to make our community a better place for everyone. ✊

As ever, the audience really made it special - hearing the raucous applaud for our guests was such a strong reminder about what we love about our home. ❤

Remember, you can hear Duncan's full story at his special Fringe show next weekend:

Wow! What an amazing response to last night's performance, for tonight's final show we have two more brilliant community heroes who are going to share their stories; Commodore Duncan Lustig-Prean, who helped to successfully challenge the ban on le****ns and g**s in the armed forces and Professor Sheena McCormak who ran a pivotal PrEP study which led to it's introduction in the UK. Don't miss your chance to hear from these amazing people as well as the musical heroes who inspire us

A huge thank you to everyone for making our opening night of Heroes so special. ❤

It was really moving and inspiring hearing Sarah and Gail's stories and the huge differences they've made to our community - we're so grateful to them both.

If you missed it, there's still chance to see us tonight - joined by the amazing Prof. Sheena McCormack and Commodore Lustig-Prean!
