Solidarity with Sarah Jane Baker
Sarah is a friend to DIY Kodak Collective and a prominent trans activist who was recalled to prison two weeks ago, following a speech she made at Trans Pride in London. Many of us could relate to Sarah’s story about state oppression and brutality, about suffering violence at the hands of bigots, and about the need to speak out and take action against such injustices. Whilst released from prison, Sarah spent all of her time engaged in antifascist action, solidarity work, and looked to become a MP to have more influence over improving prison conditions for trans and women prisoners, and prison babies.
The Free Sarah Jane Baker campaign in London has organised an online crowdfunder. Money raised will support Sarah in prison directly, and sponsor the campaign efforts. Please give what you can to the fundraiser here: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/free-sarah-jane-baker
The decision to arrest Sarah is fuelled by the government’s increasing efforts to remove our freedoms to protest, the targeting of marginalised communities, and the attack on trans rights. Since Sarah’s release from prison in September 2019, she has been an advocate for many people, including squatters and the wider NFA community, disabled people and trans prisoners. Sarah is known as ‘Britain’s longest serving trans prisoner’, and has faced horrific events arising from transphobia and misogyny whilst detained in male institutions. Earlier this year, the government further attacked trans rights by revoking protections that allowed trans prisoners to serve their sentences within prisons which match their gender. Trans women prisoners were specifically named and discriminated against in this latest prison reform. Sarah has spent many years trying to raise awareness around such issues, and we are very saddened to know our friend is suffering such injustice again.
Sarah will appear for full sentencing on 31st August and we hope to organise group travel from Brighton to London to join the Free Sarah demonstration on the day. We will release further details on this later in August, feel free to message us if you would like to attend or support us in any solidarity organising around this.
