Hi folks,

Despite the heat, there has been an abundance of fruit and berries across the Valley and there is enough jam already. Ice cream is a much more fun alternative, so here's a little recipe for you. Anyone else got any fun recipes to share for locally foraged treasures?

Enjoy your week ahead.

The Butterfly Conservation Big Butterfly Count 2026 is here! πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹

From now until 9 August, spend 15 minutes outside counting the butterflies you see and help us take nature's pulse.

With 80% of UK butterfly species in decline, it’s never been more important to understand how our insects are responding to climate change and habitat loss.

You can do it in three easy steps.
1️⃣ Download the chart or app from their website
2️⃣ Choose a place to spot butterflies and moths for 15 minutes
3️⃣ Add your counts on their website or app.

Count yourself in with them via their socials or website here: πŸ‘‰ https://butrfli.es/3SVFepj

Let us know how you get on!

Have you spotted any Six-spot burnet moth in the Valley recently? Here is a shot we took of one hatching!

ℹ️ Six-spot Burnet moth (Zygaena filipendulae) is a day flying moth and is attracted to flowers like thistles, knapweeds and scabious and can be found in flowery grasslands like Benfield Valley.

🌾 The adults feed on the nectar of knapweed, thistles and other grassland flowers. Females lay their eggs on the caterpillars' foodplants. They will then hibernate over at least one winter, emerge the following and pupate in a cocoon on long grass stems.

❌️ The red spots are indicators to predators that they poisonous and will release hydrogen cyanide when they are attacked.

Have a great Sunday

🌼🌻🌳🌿 School trips to the valley are our favourite! Over the past few weeks I’ve had the pleasure of leading trips with groups from and . Both were shining examples of young people engaging fully with nature, ecology and the outdoors. All of the students were a credit to their respective schools and I loved meeting them.

The PACA groups helped with invertebrate, plant and tree identification. We used the app to ID anything we didn’t already know and note them down. The students also pitched in measuring trees in one of the woodland spaces to work out their age and therefore their current carbon storage. I was worried they might find it boring but one student said β€˜I’m actually quite enjoying this’ which is always good to hear and I take it as high praise indeed πŸ˜‚

Benfield pupils did some net sweeping, woodland exploring and a nature trail. I love seeing how younger children deal with bugs, grass and unfamiliar plants (the scratchy, icky things!) with imagination, resilience and humour. One group became fascinated with the bits of chalk lying around the woodland and decided to β€˜set up a shop’ (see image) πŸ₯° Children often become a bit wild in the woods and we LOVE IT!!!

After an intense and crazy year last year, we are looking to get back into school, youth and community group trips and talks so if you belong to one of those communities, and would like to join us for a few hours in the valley, just reach out here or via email [email protected]. All funds that we raise through our events go towards running these free trips as they are the life blood of what we do πŸ’š

Have a lovely rest of your week, Helen x

🌞🌳🌞🌳🌞🌳 Up and out early this morning to beat the heat. With its wooded sections and grasslands. Benfield Valley is the perfect place for long morning walks before the heat rises. My boy and I mainly stuck to the woodland patches and took lots of water (he went through just over half a litre of water in an hour).

I chatted to of other folk with the same idea, all of us agreeing that tomorrow and Tuesday getting out earlier will be key to get our best friends safe (I managed to get us out for 6.30 today but tomorrow I’m thinking much earlier as it got too hot for him towards the end of the walk).

Spaces like Benfield are becoming even more crucial as our climate becomes increasingly unstable. The mosaic that all of the different habitats create serve to mitigate the worst effects such as heat and flooding as well as giving wildlife (and us!) a space to stay safe in the sun. This is just part of the reason we work so hard to preserve and defend it from planned developments.

If you and your canine companion/s get out early over the next week, we’d love to see your photos and share them here!

In the meantime, have a wonderful holiday and stay safe in the sun! πŸ’›

I’m rubbish at doing reels so here’s a little carousel of Sunday’s Three Forts marathon! πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈ Thank you to everyone who sponsored me and helped raise Β£535 for the Benfield Valley Project! It was a lovely local event, super friendly and a gorgeous route that took us 27.5 miles around the Downs to Devil’s D**e, Chanctonbury Hill and Cissbury Ring - yum! Plus the weather was perfect for marathon running, which is always a bonus!

There’s still time to sponsor me if you can https://chuffed.org/project/threeforts-bvp All donations go directly to the project and help fund things like our work with local groups and schools, our aim to create a new vision for the valley and running costs. Thank you again!

πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈ πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈ πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈ Tomorrow is the day! Tomorrow I’ll run the Three Forts marathon in Lancing and I’m so excited. I had a nasty fall in the Downs on a training run last week and my knee is a bit of a mess (nothing serious just a deep wound) so I’ll be going at my β€˜chilled pace’ (like I have any other πŸ˜†) but a day on the South Downs Way is always a good day for me πŸ’š

Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who has donated so far - I’m so grateful to you πŸ™ŒπŸΌ. Only Β£30 to reach the Β£500 mark πŸ₯³ If you are able to donate any amount at all it will be hugely appreciated. Everything goes straight into the BVP account and will help us run our community events, create a vision for the valley and go towards our CrowdJustice fundraiser.

Donate here: https://chuffed.org/project/threeforts-bvp

See you on the other side πŸ₯° wish me luck!
