BARCO sends our most heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Jane Adetoro, Christina Walters and Becky Walters - the three sisters who lost their lives Brighton last week. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this devastating loss.

If you are in a position to do so, please donate to the GoFundMe set up by the family - https://gofund.me/c6d48b1c6

This is a huge tragedy, and our communities are feeling the impact. While we do not wish to speculate on what has happened, but we feel it is important to speak up.

We have partnered with for the Brighton BASH Carnival, and our chosen theme this year is Water. In light of this tragedy, this theme takes on a deeper significance.

The theme of water celebrates our connection to the sea and the natural environment that surrounds our city. Water connects us, sustains us, and carries the stories of our ancestors across generations and continents.

For Black communities, water holds profound cultural, spiritual, and historical meaning. It can represent healing, renewal, freedom, and resilience. Yet water also reminds us of our vulnerability and of the preciousness of every life.

We will be holding space for silence and reflection in honour of the three sisters at the BASH in July

With love and solidarity,
BARCO

We are so proud to announce our partnership with Sussex Bay. 🌊💙

Sussex Bay exists to protect, restore and celebrate 100 miles of coastline from Selsey to Camber Sands. When they came forward to support BARCO and The Brighton Bash Carnival this year, our theme of water became even more relevant! Water is life. It is healing. It is connection. It is survival.

We live by the water. We are shaped by it. We heal in it. We feel drawn to it in ways that go beyond words - across cultures, across generations, across everything that makes us who we are.

BARCO cares just as deeply about this planet, these seas and these waters as we do about anti-Black racism and community. Because you cannot separate the two. The people most harmed by environmental destruction are the same people most harmed by racism. We stand for both. Always.

Sussex Bay - thank you. Your support means everything to an organisation like ours. As a Community Interest Company we survive through funding, partnerships and the generosity of people and organisations who believe in what we do.

Together we celebrate the water. Together we protect it. Together we heal.

Are you under 25 and ready to actually change something? 👀🖤

We’re looking for a young Black voice to join the BARCO board — and we mean it when we say we want to hear from YOU.

Not someone who fits a mould. Not someone with a perfect CV. Someone real. Someone who cares. Someone who has something to say about equity, anti-racism and what community should actually look like.

You might be exactly who we’re looking for if you:
🖤 Identify as Black, African Diasporic or of mixed African heritage
🖤 Care deeply about anti-racism, equity and community transformation
🖤 Have fresh ideas and an honest perspective
🖤 Want to help shape the decisions that matter
🖤 Can make at least 2 meetings a year

That’s it. No experience needed. No corporate speak. No barriers.

What you get in return:
✨ A real, CV-boosting board position shaping the future of BARCO
✨ Access to experts, creatives and industry professionals through our community network ✨ A seat at the table — not just a place in the room

Brighton needs your voice. BARCO needs your voice. The next generation of this organisation starts with someone saying yes. Could that be you? 💛

📩 Send us an email: [email protected]

Share this with a young person who needs to see it. You might just change their life. 🙌🏾
