We are absolutely delighted to share that Bridlington Community Shed has been nominated for a BBC Radio Humberside Make a Difference Award 2026! 🎉

To say we are humbled would be an understatement.

The nomination recognised the Shed’s efforts to tackle loneliness and social isolation by creating a welcoming place where people can come together to make, mend, share skills, drink tea, have a laugh, and most importantly — connect with others.

What started with a few conversations between like-minded people around a café table has grown into a busy community workshop full of chatter, friendship, sawdust, cups of tea, dominoes, and community projects.

We would like to say a huge thank you to whoever nominated us. Your words genuinely mean a lot to everyone involved with the Shed. ❤️

This recognition belongs to every member, volunteer, supporter, trustee, partner organisation, and person who has walked through the door and helped make the Shed what it is becoming.

And of course… a special mention to the Shed’s most important piece of equipment — the kettle — which continues to work tirelessly in support of community wellbeing! ☕😄

Thank you everyone for your continued support.

Another fantastic community project completed by the Shed team! 🔨💙
Over the past few weeks, our members have been busy building and installing bespoke bench seating for — helping to create welcoming in-door spaces for young people to relax, connect and feel supported.

This project is a brilliant example of what can happen when people come together, share skills, and give their time to support the local community. From measuring and cutting, to assembly and on-site installation, it was a real team effort from start to finish.
A huge shout out to all the Shed members who got involved with the build, transport, and installation work. You should all be incredibly proud of what’s been achieved. 👏

Projects like this are about far more than wood and screws — they’re about building community, confidence, friendships, and spaces that make a difference.

Well done everyone! 💪☕🪚

Busy week at the Shed! 🔨☕
Members have been hard at work building bench box seats for Fuse Youth Services, alongside a few workshop improvements to keep everything moving forward nicely.
We also carried out some absolutely critical safety testing on the most important piece of equipment in the Shed… the kettle! 🚨🫖
Given that this vital bit of kit is almost permanently switched on and always ready to make tea, coffee, along with the occasional biscuit break, members will be relieved to hear that it passed with flying colours. Panic over.
While we had the PAT tester out, we also checked another 30 items around the workshop just to make sure everything is safe and shipshape.
A productive week, a safer workshop, and thankfully… brews remain operational.

Last week at the Shed was another great one, with members getting stuck into a range of hands-on projects 👍
A real highlight was this brilliant free-standing bird feeder, made entirely from scrap wood and an old roof slate. A proper bit of upcycling!

Big thanks to Alan for supporting Kev with his first build —great teamwork and a fantastic result. It just shows what can be achieved with a bit of creativity, shared skills, and a few reclaimed materials.
Projects like this are what the Shed is all about: making, sharing, and enjoying a cuppa along the way ☕

If you fancy getting involved, feel free to drop in and see what we’re about.

🔧 Another Project Finished at the Shed! 🔧

The members at Bridlington Community Shed have been busy in the workshop completing these oil drum tops for the brilliant group The Oily Tykes.

Using reclaimed timber and a bit of Shed know-how, we’ve turned a simple oil drum into a sturdy table top—perfect for events, gatherings, or just somewhere to rest a brew between jobs!

Projects like this are a great example of what the Shed is all about:
🪚 sharing skills
🤝 helping local groups
☕ and enjoying a good chat while making something useful.

We wish The Oily Tykes all the best with them and hope they get plenty of use.

If you’d like to find out more about the Shed, drop in and see us!

A recent spell of dry weather had Members engaged outdoors completing several upcycling projects, which will help to improve the outside space at the Shed.
A couple of wooden dining chairs have been converted into a two-seater bench by adding a seat made from recycled pallet wood timber - sanded and stained.
A former packing case has been turned into a raised planter by the creation of a false base, lining the interior and adding a capping also made from recycled pallet wood lengths.

☕ A great morning at the Shed talking men’s health

On Tuesday we welcomed Emily Johnson, Senior Patient and Public Engagement Coordinator from NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Cancer Alliance, to the Shed to talk about prostate cancer awareness.

The session was relaxed, informal and very much in the spirit of the Shed – a chat over a cuppa, asking questions and learning what signs to look out for.

We had 11 Shed members and 4 members of the public join us, with the conversation running for around 45 minutes.

These kinds of sessions are really important. Many men don’t talk about their health, but a friendly environment like the Shed can make those conversations easier to start.

A big thank you to Emily and the team at NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Cancer Alliance for coming along and helping raise awareness.

And remember — sometimes the most important tool in the Shed is the kettle.

🔧 Another busy week at the Shed! 🌱

Our brilliant Shedders have been hard at it again:

🛠️ Repaired a 14” band saw
🔩 Fitted a new woodworking vice to the bench
⚙️ Installed an engineering vice
🌿 Made more wooden plant labels ready for sale
🧹 And even tackled a litter tidy-up around the outside of the Shed

Huge thanks to Jim and Julian for helping keep the place looking its best 👏

There’s always something happening at Bridlington Community Shed — making, fixing, sharing… and plenty of tea along the way!

We’re really proud to share that Bridlington Community Shed has been awarded the Silver Armed Forces Community Accreditation 🇬🇧

This recognition means we can now apply for small grants to better support veterans who are members of our Shed community.

The Shed exists to provide a welcoming space to make, share skills, enjoy a cuppa, and connect with others — and that absolutely includes those who have served.

Stuart Gray (Head of Volunteering & Armed Forces Lead Cover) will be visiting the Shed soon to formally present the award and talk through how we can best support our veteran members going forward.

A big thank you to everyone who continues to make the Shed a welcoming place for all.

Bridlington Community Shed is set to officially open tomorrow, Thursday 12th February, marking the launch of a new community initiative aimed at bringing people together through shared activity and social connection.
The Shed has been established as a welcoming, inclusive space where adults can meet, share skills and take part in practical activities in a relaxed and supportive environment. Whilst hands-on making forms a key part of the offer, the wider aim is to support wellbeing by reducing social isolation and encouraging connection within the local community.

Developed by a small group of local members, the project has grown from conversations about the challenges many people face later in life, particularly around loneliness and reduced social contact following retirement or changes in circumstances.
The official opening event will provide an opportunity for local residents to, supporters and partner organisations to visit the space, meet existing members and to learn more about how the Shed will operate.

The Shed will be officially opened by Bridlington Mayor, Councillor Angela Walker, at 1.00pm. Visitors are welcome to the Shed from midday.
