YWT Living Seas

YWT Living Seas Living Seas is The Wildlife Trusts’ vision for the future of the UK’s seas. What do you think of when you picture Living Seas? The next five years are critical.

Within Living Seas, marine wildlife thrives, from the depths of the ocean to the coastal shallows. A rocky reef bursting with brightly coloured fish, corals and sponges? A boat trip in the company of leaping dolphins and playful seals? Fishermen hauling nets that are brimful of big, tasty fish? Living Seas are all these things and more. Unfortunately the UK’s seas are not Living Seas. Decades of n

eglect have left them damaged and degraded, a shadow of their former diversity and abundance. We urgently need your help to bring them back to life. It is literally ‘make or break’ time. With new laws and Government commitments in the offing, we have a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity. If we make the very best of that opportunity, pushing every step of the way, our seas will turn the corner and start to recover their health. If we do not, they will continue on their downward spiral. With such a beautifully diverse coastline, the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s Living Seas Awareness and Research team is well placed to deliver their exciting and innovative programme of marine activities. Through public engagement, research surveys, formal education sessions and awareness campaigns, the team teaches not only about our fantastic marine wildlife, but also the role our seas play in everyday life. The programme has something for everyone, young and old, expert or novice. Keep a look out for events that you can get involved with on our website http://www.ywt.org.uk/whats-on

Wet wipes don’t dissolve in a jar.
They don’t dissolve in a river.
They don’t dissolve in the ocean.
But they do end up there. 🌊

Help protect our wildlife, bin your wet wipes, even the ones labelled “flushable”.

🦀 Lost claw? No problem. Crabs can regrow their limbs after moulting! Just remember to CRAB responsibly when you’re on the coast.

Declines in river insects hit harder than you'd think... Salmon and sea trout depend on insect larvae during their freshwater years, and swifts and swallows rely on them to fuel long migrations. One treated dog in a stream is part of a much bigger story. 🌿

Nature is diverse. The ocean is too. 🌈

This Pride Month, we’re diving under the surface to celebrate the incredible diversity of life in our seas.

From sex-changing oysters to lifelong dolphin partnerships, our seas remind us that diversity has always been part of the natural world.

Happy Pride Month from Yorkshire Wildlife Trust!

Do you litter pick along the River Esk? We want to hear from you! 🗑️

From the hills and towns to the coast, everything dropped on land can find its way into our waterways. Litter, plastics and everyday pollution can travel downstream, impacting wildlife and habitats all the way to the sea.

As part of the REConnect project, we’re looking for people and local litter-picking groups who want to take their impact a step further by helping us carry out litter surveys along the River Esk.
You don’t need to be an expert, just someone who cares about protecting our rivers!

Whether you already lead a community group or simply head out solo with a litter picker, we’d love to connect you with a wider movement linking local action to healthier rivers and seas.

This , we're celebrating one of the ocean's unsung heroes: seagrass.

Meet Corey the seagrass core. After leaving a thriving seagrass meadow, Corey set off across the mudflats to help start a brand-new seagrass neighbourhood at Spurn Point.

His mission? To help create a meadow that will:
🌿 Capture carbon
🐟 Support marine wildlife
🌊 Help protect our coastline

, one of the largest seascape restoration projects in the UK aims to restore 10 acres of seagrass each year. Delivered by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, with support from Ørsted, ReMeMaRe and the Water Environment Improvement Fund.

Our seas are home to incredible wildlife, but thousands of seabirds, whales, dolphins and seals are accidentally caught in fishing gear every year. The solutions exist, now we need action🌊🐋🐬🐦🦭

Join The Wildlife Trusts in asking MPs to support stronger protections for marine wildlife by attending a parliamentary event on 10th June.

Take action today 👇

A hidden crisis is unfolding beneath the waves 🌊

Every year, thousands of seabirds, whales, dolphins and seals are accidentally caught in fishing gear – this is called bycatch.

The numbers are shocking but there is good news! Solutions already exist, and with stronger UK Government action marine wildlife across UK seas can be better protected.

You can help by inviting your MP to attend an important parliamentary event on 10 June.

Beneath the waves at Runswick Bay, a hidden world is thriving 🌊🦀
As part of the REConnect project, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Shoresearch volunteers explored the incredible kelp beds and rockpools of Runswick Bay, recording the amazing variety of species that call this coastline home.

Every observation matters. The data collected helps experts monitor our fragile marine ecosystems and build a clearer picture of how pollution, climate change, and invasive species are affecting sea life along our shores.

Yorkshire’s coastline is teeming with life, you just have to know where to look. 🔎🌿🌊
