Clark’s Story 💙
Clark has 1p36 Deletion Syndrome, a rare chromosome disorder. He began having epileptic seizures at five months old and has been following a Brainwave Therapy Programme since 2016.
Clark has a learning disability, developmental delay, visual and hearing impairments, sensory processing disorder, epilepsy and cardiomyopathy. He is nonverbal and has limited mobility, although his mum says he can crawl for miles for the right biscuit!
After other parents recommended Brainwave, Clark’s family contacted the team and felt they had found something special from the very first call.
During his assessment, the therapists listened to the family and identified areas where Clark needed support, including mobility, communication, sensory integration, engagement and independence. They created a personalised programme of small, achievable activities that the whole family could work on together at home.
Since then, Clark’s mobility has developed enormously. He can crawl and bottom shuffle between rooms and manage stairs. With support, he can also stand from a kneeling position.
His communication continues to grow too. Clark can make choices using objects and photographs, giving him a way to express himself. Makaton has also helped his family communicate with him and reduced his frustration.
Clark’s sensory programme includes swinging, bouncing, rolling and playing with pasta, play dough and slime. With repetition and encouragement, experiences that once felt impossible are becoming possible. He recently went bowling, coped brilliantly with the lights, music and crowds, and even got a strike! 🎳
