💚 Sorrel the Hen Harrier: still flying, still breeding, still inspiring hope

Some birds become more than a sighting. They become a story. Sorrel is one of those birds.

Ringed and satellite-tagged as a young Hen Harrier in 2016, Sorrel has spent nearly a decade showing just how remarkable, resilient and wide-ranging these birds can be. From Langholm to Dumfries & Galloway, Arran, the Cairngorms, Geltsdale and Kielder, her journeys have connected landscapes, conservationists, volunteers, raptor workers and local communities across Britain and Ireland.

This year, we’re delighted to share that Sorrel’s latest brood have now been ringed, another positive chapter in the life of an extraordinary bird.

Hen Harrier conservation rightly attracts close interest, particularly around tagging, nest monitoring and the welfare of individual birds. The Hawk and Owl Trust has supported Sorrel’s monitoring since the beginning, when she was fitted with a satellite tag as a young bird in 2016, and her story shows why careful, licensed and experienced monitoring remains so valuable.

Long-term tracking helps build a clearer picture of where these birds travel, the pressures they face, where breeding attempts succeed or fail, and where protection is most needed. In Sorrel’s case, almost a decade of information has helped connect conservationists, raptor workers and local teams across different landscapes, enabling them to share knowledge and work together responsibly.

Continuing this work matters because every season adds to what we know, supports better protection for Hen Harriers, and gives birds like Sorrel, and now her newly ringed young, the best possible chance.

Sorrel has successfully fledged multiple broods, endured failed nesting attempts, travelled huge distances, and returned year after year to raise young. She is proof that long-term conservation can make a difference — and that every surviving, breeding Hen Harrier matters.

We are proud to be part of her story, grateful to everyone who has helped monitor and protect her over the years, and thrilled that another generation of Hen Harriers is now taking its place in the skies.

Here’s to Sorrel, her newly ringed brood, and everyone working quietly, carefully and responsibly for the future of these magnificent birds. 🐣🦅

Chew Moo’s strikes gold again!

Four lovely barn owl owlets have hatched at Chew Moo’s Farm in Somerset— and even in what could be a tricky year like 2025, it was no real shock that this site still delivered. That’s down to great management: wide field margins, rough grassland left untouched, and those fantastic, thick hedgerows that make ideal hunting and nesting habitat.

This farm shows exactly how you can run a farm and look after wildlife at the same time — a brilliant example for everyone. Well done to the three of you; another fantastic season.

And here’s a little secret: I reckon the female is already thinking about a second brood. I’ve got my reasons… but no spoilers!

Thank you so much to Chew Moo's Ice Cream Co for your warm hospitality and for looking after this special farm so well.

Well Women Walk- Shapwick Moor

The evening began on a wonderfully warm and sunny note. As we ventured down the track, the reserve's vibrant wildlife was on full display. The warm weather brought out a spectacular array of insects, including Damselflies and Dragonflies darting across the paths with their brilliant, metallic colours. And so many Painted Lady butterflies fluttering amongst the trackside vegetation.

The absolute highlight of the walk was the magical sight of a Barn Owl quartering low over the grassland—a classic and breathtaking Shapwick Moor spectacle.

The walk concluded with a quiet vigil in the hide to watch the deer grazing. After sitting remarkably quietly and patiently, and as dusk began to settle, three badgers emerged from their sett, providing a spectacular finale to a thoroughly lovely evening in nature.

If you missed this one, don’t worry — our next Well Woman Walk is happening Monday 29th June 7pm. Head to the website to book your place as spaces are limited. Come join us for some fresh air, good company, and a dose of nature’s calm.

A Morning of Discovery: The "Well Women" Wander at Shapwick Moor.
The Well Women group set out to explore the stunning landscape of the Shapwick Moor Reserve, proving that sometimes the best medicine is a pair of binoculars and a bit of fresh Somerset air.
The soundtrack to our walk was provided by the energetic songs of Whitethroats darting through the tree lines—a sure sign that spring is in full swing.
The meadows were alive with orange-tip butterflies, Kestrels and cuckoo flowers, a local favorite this time of year.
We are already looking forward to our next outing into the wild, which will be on Monday 25th May 7pm. Head to the website to book at: https://members.hawkandowltrust.org/Event-Registration/EventId/202
