πŸ›βœ¨ Recently, Carys visited Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Castellau as part of our 'Save the Small Blue at Cwm Tips' project to introduce some of the wonderful moths found right on the school's doorstep.

A moth trap was set up at the school overnight and, despite some heavy showers, it produced a lovely selection of species for the children to see the following morning. Carys spent the morning with the pre-school, nursery and reception classes, giving them the opportunity to get up close to the moths and examine them, along with other fascinating specimens, under the digi-scope. πŸ¦‹

Despite their young ages, the children were completely captivated by these amazing creatures. Their curiosity, excitement and endless questions were fantastic! πŸ’š

Some of the species recorded included Peppered Moth, White Ermine, Heart and Dart, Flame Shoulder and Flame.

The highlight of the morning, however, was undoubtedly watching Mrs Morris chasing a Large Yellow Underwing around the classroom with a butterfly net! πŸ€£πŸ¦‹

A huge thank you to everyone at Ysgol Castellau for making us so welcome. Inspiring the next generation of nature lovers is what it's all about. πŸ’š

πŸ’š A brilliant day in Swansea today, leading two well-attended guided walks on behalf of Swansea Council as part of the Welsh Government-funded Local Places for Nature programme.

We spent the day exploring the beautiful Botanical Gardens at Singleton Park, discovering some of the wildlife that calls this green oasis home.

Highlights included Willoughby's Leafcutter Bee, Gwynne's Mining Bee, Narcissus Bulb Fly and Southern Cuckoo Bee busily visiting flowers throughout the gardens. 🌸🌼

Butterflies proved a little elusive, with just three species recorded – Comma, Ringlet and Meadow Brown – but there was still plenty to see and enjoy along the way.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us. It was wonderful to share the gardens, chat about nature, and spend time outdoors with so many enthusiastic people.

Thanks to Joel for the extra pictures πŸ™‚

πŸŒΏπŸ•·οΈ What a day at Pant-y-Sais Fen! πŸ•·οΈπŸŒΏ

Today's 'Fenland Wonders: Discover Pant-y-Sais' Rare Invertebrates' walk saw a brilliant turnout β€” in fact, the largest turnout for any single guided walk we've run so far this year! Thank you to everyone who joined us. πŸ’š

And, in a welcome surprise, the sun decided to make an appearance too β€” something that has been rather rare lately! Thankfully, the rare encounters didn't stop there...

Out on the fen, we found plenty of the reed beetle Plateumaris bracata, a species that is rare in both the UK and across Europe despite feeding on the widespread and abundant Common Reed. Incredibly, we encountered more individuals today than have ever been recorded in the entire known history of the species in Wales. How amazing is that!?

Another excellent find was the scarce ant-mimic jumping spider Synageles venator, with two adults spotted along the boardwalk.

Other highlights included the beautiful Bee Beetle, masses of flowering Marsh Cinquefoil, and a large Drinker Moth caterpillar.

Then, along the Tennant Canal, we were treated to two female Fen Raft Spiders β€” Britain's largest spider and one of its rarest. This remarkable species is legally protected and Pant-y-Sais remains one of the best places in Wales to see it.

A fantastic day celebrating one of Wales' most important wetlands and the extraordinary wildlife it supports. Thank you again to everyone who came along and helped make it such an enjoyable event. 🌿πŸͺ²πŸ•·οΈ

πŸ† Record of the Week! πŸ†

We're delighted that our Golden-ringed Dragonfly record from the BioBlitz at Cefn Golau Cemetery has been selected as by South East Wales Biodiversity Records Centre πŸ’š

It's a great reminder of just how important it is to submit your wildlife sightings, whether they're of a rare species or something you see every day.

Every record helps build a better picture of where species occur, how populations are changing over time, and how wildlife is responding to factors such as habitat loss, land management and climate change.

These records are used by conservation organisations, local authorities, ecologists and researchers to inform decisions on the ground and help protect important sites and species.

So next time you spot a dragonfly, bee, butterfly, bird or wildflower, consider recording it. Every record matters, and together they help tell the story of nature in Wales. πŸ“‹

today is a gorgeous Golden-ringed Dragonfly (Cordulegaster boltonii) spotted in Cefn Golau Cemetery during a Glo i Natur CIC BioBlitz.

It's Love Your Burial Grounds Week, an annual celebration of nature & history from Caring for God's Acre!

Many thanks to Liam Olds for the photo, and the Glo i Natur team for the BioBlitz records.

🌿β›ͺ A wonderful finale to Love Your Burial Ground Week in Blaenau Gwent! β›ͺ🌿

Today we held the second and final of our BioBlitzes, this time at St Illtyds Church, Aberbeeg.

This historic church is set within beautiful, flower-rich grounds that support an impressive variety of wildlife. Although temperatures were a little on the cool side, the rain kindly held off until we finished, allowing us to enjoy a productive morning of recording.

By the end of the BioBlitz, we had recorded around 160 species of plants, invertebrates, birds, reptiles and more.

Highlights included:

🌸 Field Scabious and Greater Knapweed
πŸͺ° Common Red-legged Robberfly (Dioctria rufipes)
πŸ¦‹ Yarrow Plume (Gillmeria pallidactyla)
πŸ₯š The eggs of the Fox Moth (Macrothylacia rubi)
πŸ› A Common Quaker (Orthosia cerasi) caterpillar
🐝 Orange-vented Mason Bee (Osmia leaiana)
🦎 Common Lizard
..and plenty more besides!

A huge thank you to everyone who came along and helped make the event so enjoyable. We'd also like to thank the church's 'Friends Of' group for kindly opening the church and providing refreshments throughout the morning.

Finally, thank you to BG and Torfaen Local Nature Partnership for making these events possible through Local Places for Nature funding from the Welsh Government.

Together, our two BioBlitzes during Love Your Burial Ground Week highlighted just how important churchyards and cemeteries can be for wildlife, providing valuable refuges for nature alongside their cultural and historical significance. πŸ’š
