📣 FREE STEM workshops for secondary schools across South East Wales.

We’re excited to launch Colour Coders, a hands-on STEM project that helps Key Stage 3/4 pupils explore the science and technology behind the LED.

The programme includes TWO activities:

Activity 1: EESW-led workshop
Pupils assemble a simple squeeze-torch to introduce the fundamentals of LED technology and the semiconductor principles that underpin modern visual technologies.

Activity 2: Teacher-led coding challenge
Schools will receive resources, equipment and supporting materials for a follow-on micro:bit coding activity, helping pupils programme RGB LEDs and create their own colour combinations through coding.

The project is designed to support cross-curricular STEM learning while helping teachers build confidence in delivering hands-on coding and electronics activities in the classroom.

The programme is fully funded for eligible schools within the Cardiff Capital Region (Blaenau Gwent; Bridgend; Caerphilly; Cardiff; Merthyr Tydfil; Monmouthshire; Newport; Rhondda Cynon Taf; Torfaen; and Vale of Glamorgan.)

📢New pilot project for South Wales primary schools📢

EESW STEM Cymru is excited to launch 'Ddoe, Heddiw, Yfory', a cross-curricular project supported by National Grid. We’re initially looking for 10 South Wales primary schools this summer term, before the rollout of the full programme from September.

It's a 2-phase project:

💡 Phase 1: Teacher-led research and design activities exploring Wales's engineering past, present and future.

🤖 Phase 2: An EESW-led in-school coding workshop where pupils programme robots using block coding.

Through creativity, teamwork and problem-solving, pupils will build real-world STEM skills while celebrating Welsh culture and identity.

Huge congratulations to Ysgol Cynwyd Sant from Maesteg on an incredible achievement at the STEM Racing Primary UK National Finals.

Held at the Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham, this year’s event was the largest Primary final ever, with 70 teams competing, including 9 from Wales and international teams from Hong Kong, Singapore and Germany 🌍

We’re delighted to share that the team, Phoenix Fires, achieved outstanding success:
🏅 Design & Engineering Portfolio Award
🏎️ Best Engineered Car (podium finish)
🏆 Crowned 2026 UK STEM Primary National Champions

The pupils have been working closely with our team in recent weeks, and it’s been fantastic to see their creativity, determination and those all-important “eureka” moments come to life as they developed their car 💡

A huge well done to the pupils, and to their teacher Miss Thomas, for their dedication, focus and hard work throughout. It’s been an honour to support such an inspiring group of young people.

✨ Girls into STEM at Bangor University ✨

On 25 Feb, Year 10 girls from across North Wales joined us for a hands‑on day exploring how tech, science, maths and creativity shape the world around us 💡🌍

From coding Sphero robots 🤖 to cracking data puzzles 🔍, discovering the maths behind marketing 📊 and experimenting in STEM labs 🧪, the day was all about curiosity, confidence and ideas that make a difference.

Huge thanks to our brilliant partners and to the pupils and teachers who brought so much energy to the day 💙

💬 “The girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves and had their eyes opened!” – Dawn Wilde, EESW/STEMCymru

We can’t wait to welcome even more future innovators to Bangor! ✨💫

📣 Volunteer assessors urgently needed in South Wales – can you help?

Our EESW Project Awards Day on 22nd April brings together sixth form students from across Wales who have spent months working on real engineering challenges with industry.

📍 Swansea University Great Hall

We’re looking for engineers, STEM professionals and academics to get involved as volunteer assessors. It’s a really rewarding way to support young people, see some fantastic projects and connect with others working in STEM. You’ll also receive a CPD certificate.

You’ll just need to review one project in advance and then join us on the day to meet the team and assess their presentation. Full support is provided.

Take a look at last year’s event and register your interest here: http://bit.ly/4bqHpXx

Please share if you know someone who might be interested 🙌

From an EESW Sixth Form project to a career in engineering.

Gareth, now an EESW volunteer, shares how his experience helped shape his career.

🔹 What activity did you take part in and what was it like?
“I took part in the EESW Project while in Sixth Form at Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr. It was an extremely enjoyable and unique experience that propelled me towards studying Engineering at university. I particularly enjoyed the collaboration and problem solving aspects.”

🔹 Where has your STEM journey taken you since?
“Since taking part in the EESW Project, I studied Environmental Engineering at Swansea University and have worked across engineering, science and sustainability roles at organisations including WEPA, Natural Resources Wales, Tata Steel and Arup.”

🔹 What advice would you give to students considering taking part?
“Trust your intuition. The project is a chance to experience how engineers work through problems. Solutions do not need to be perfect. Iteration is part of the process.”
