When disaster strikes thousands of miles away, a small act here in Brentwood can still change a life.
This Saturday, 12 September, local Rotarians will be out in Brentwood High Street, collecting donations to support people affected by the devastating recent floods in Nepal.
On 26 August 2026, catastrophic flooding swept through parts of Nepal following a glacial collapse in the Himalayas. Communities along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors were hit particularly hard, with homes, roads, bridges and essential infrastructure destroyed.
The scale of the disaster is enormous. Around 1.6 million people have been affected, with more than a thousand lives reported lost and thousands more people still missing. Families have been displaced, communities have been devastated and many people are now facing the enormous challenge of rebuilding their lives. (UNICEF)
But behind every statistic is a person.
A parent looking for a child.
A family who no longer has a home.
Someone who went to work that morning and never returned.
Communities that, in a matter of minutes, lost what had taken generations to build.
Why we are collecting
Rotary has always been about people helping people.
Sometimes that means supporting projects here in Brentwood. At other times it means recognising that our community extends far beyond our own High Street.
The immediate needs in Nepal include shelter, clean water, sanitation, food, medical support and assistance for children and families who have been displaced. Humanitarian organisations are already working on the ground to provide emergency support. (UNICEF)
For us, doing nothing simply isn’t an option.
That is why Rotarians will be giving their time this Saturday to stand in Brentwood High Street and ask our community to help.
A few pounds can become something much bigger
When hundreds of people each make a small contribution, those individual acts of kindness become significant.
You don’t have to make a huge donation.
£1, £5 or £10 — whatever you can comfortably give — all contributes towards a much larger collective effort.
And perhaps just as importantly, it sends a message to people experiencing unimaginable loss:
You have not been forgotten.
Please come and say hello
If you’re shopping, having a coffee or simply passing through Brentwood High Street this Saturday, please look out for our Rotary volunteers and collection buckets.
Stop for a moment.
Have a chat.
And, if you’re able to, make a donation.
What may feel like a small gesture on a Saturday morning in Brentwood could help provide hope to somebody facing one of the most difficult moments of their life.
Brentwood helping Nepal — one donation at a time.
