As temperatures begin to rise, it is important to avoid overheating during parkrun. Choose light, sweat-wicking clothing which helps draw moisture away from the body and regulate your temperature effectively. Don’t forget a cap, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun’s UV rays. It’s also worth checking that any friends, family members or spectators joining you are prepared for the conditions too.

While we can adapt to warmer weather, our four-legged friends have a much harder time. Dogs can only regulate their body temperature through panting, which isn’t always enough to prevent overheating. All dogs are at risk of heatstroke, so it’s often safest to leave them at home on particularly warm mornings. Please follow the RSPCA’s advice on dog first aid and identifying the signs of heatstroke. Their welfare always comes first.

We know many of you have looked forward to parkrun all week excited to hit a PB. However, hotter days may not be the best time to chase one. Consider adjusting your expectations and pacing yourself sensibly to avoid overheating. This is especially important if you’re taking part with children, as they can take longer to acclimatise to temperature changes, heat up more quickly than adults and sweat less, making it harder for them to cool down.
Slow down, walk, or take a break if you’re feeling too warm. After all, there’s always next week.
parkrun isn’t just about speed. It’s about the community and connection, so parkwalking can be just as rewarding. You might strike up a conversation with another participant, enjoy the company of the tail walker, or simply take in the beauty of your local green space.
𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 💦
Many of you love a parkrun coffee or cuppa, but caffeine can cause dehydration. It is not ideal on warmer days, when hydration is the most important.
Bringing a bottle of water with you is a simple and effective way to stay refreshed before and after your event.

After you walk, jog, run or volunteer, you may sweat more because of the heat. A change of clothes, some deodorant, and a shady spot can all help you cool down and recover comfortably. What’s better than cooling down in the shade and enjoying a chat with family and friends?
