All across the world, people are coming together to take action: reconnecting rivers, removing barriers, and restoring critical habitat.

Here on the River South Esk, part of the 'Restoring the River South Esk' project, involved re-meandering a 250 m stretch of the March Burn in the upper catchment. Large wood structures were incorporated into the new channel to promote river processes, resulting in a mosaic of river features, such as pools, glides, riffles and runs, which provide habitat for the different life stages of salmonid fish and invertebrate species.

Wild Atlantic salmon have declined 80% in the past 50 years.

The time to act is now.

In 2025, only 28,020 salmon were caught by rods, the lowest figure since records began in 1952.

A summary of the Scottish Government 2025 salmon and sea trout catch statistics can be read here: https://www.gov.scot/publications/salmon-sea-trout-fishery-statistics-2025/

Regarding the Esk district, the North Esk caught 691 salmon and grilse (99.3% caught and released), which is the lowest figure since 1982. Sea trout catches were 387 with a C&R rate of 76%.

On the South Esk, 326 salmon & grilse were caught (99.4% C&R), which was higher than in 2024 but still the second lowest on record. Of note was that only 6 salmon were caught in the spring. Sea trout catches were 266 with 100% returned.

On the Bervie, only 1 grilse and 1 sea trout were caught, both returned.

The heat and lack of water in 2025 would without doubt have affected the number of fish in the rivers.
