Braemar Mountain Rescue

Braemar Mountain Rescue Braemar MRT is registered charity providing rescue services in the Southern Cairngorms

Braemar Mountain Rescue Association was formed in 1965 by a group of local people who were concerned about the increasing number of mountain accidents and the resultant hardship and risk to local residents, who, often with no mountaineering experience or proper clothing, were called upon to rescue others and all too often to carry home the bodies of those for whom rescue had come too late. These v

olunteers carried on a long tradition of local people giving aid to those lost in the mountains and from the outset they worked hand in glove with the local Police Mountain Rescue Team which had been formed some years earlier. This tradition is maintained today, the two Teams operating as one integrated unit with a joint management.

Team members and Aberdeen MRT just returned from an all night callout to assist two walkers who had become disoriented in a white out. All are now safely back at base.
As you can see we still have winter conditions on the higher summits.

Call-out yesterday afternoon to assist an elderly walker on the Lochnagar track. Wishing them a full and swift recovery.

Have you ever needed to call Mountain Rescue or had a near-miss in the mountains? Help us shape the future of mountain safety!

We have around 750 self-reported mountain incidents - and that collection is being opened up for academic analysis by the Centre for Mountain Medicine at the University of Lancashire.

The goal is to uncover patterns, identify what goes wrong, and turn shared experience into safer mountains for everyone.

We're also planning focus groups later in 2026 - so if you've submitted a report before, watch this space.

Every story counts, help us build a bigger database and share your real-world story here: https://tinyurl.com/35a3jy9h

The team responded to two call-outs this afternoon. The first was for a lost walker on Ben Macdui. A small party were dispatched to hopefully meet them on the way down as communication had been lost. Thankfully this is what happened and they were escorted back down. At the same time we were called with SFRS to reports of someone in the water at the Quoich. They were extricated safely and passed to the SAS crew. Good multi-agency work and our regards to both casualties.

A massive thank you to the crew of Rescue 851, the Search & Rescue helicopter based in Inverness. Following a message passed by a satellite enabled device they were able to uplift a casualty from the Hutchison hut, saving us us a long night and carry. We can report though that it was a clear starry night at Derry Lodge, a welcome change after all the cloudy clag over the last few weeks. Our best wishes to the casualty for a rapid recovery.
