Sustainable Gastronomy
Rotarian Juli Thompson organised a fantastic event at Darley Street Market on 18th June 2026. Her deep passion for food integrity is demonstrated in everything she does. She is a leading advocate for the Food Focus and Sustainability agenda within Yorkshire and North Lincs (Rotary District 1040).
She invited a number keynote speakers who delved in to many aspects of the food agenda from production, sourcing, distribution, costs, consumption, and health. We had input and demonstrations from the Hawthorn Restaurant in Haworth and Prashad, Indian Vegetarian Cuisine, Drighlington. This was followed by a tour of Darley Street market stopping at a number of stalls and tasting their fresh produce. She also promoted The Manjit Wolstenholme Young Achievement Award which has been established to honour the memory and legacy of Manjit Wolstenholme. It celebrates young people who are striving to achieve their full potential. Thank you to you Juli, the laughter and fun, all the guest presenters, the audience and to Darley Street Market.

#40 Soup Results
Amazing, 10 years of Soup, 107 projects, who would have thought! Last night we had 3 bids for some seed funding. Michelle from BIDS, Bradford Inclusive Disability Service based in the Horton Wing at Bradford Royal Infirmary Hospital lone out equipment and toys for disabled children. Zones for the children, working with different age groups, is going really well. Recently they started an adult zone which has been running for 6 months and have 10 members, for which they get no funding. They take 18 plus disabled young people out and about, to do things that able bodied people take for granted. So would like some help with funding these activities. https://www.bradfordinclusivedisabilityservice.co.uk/
James, a Kinship carer wants to raise awareness of the implications of the impact of suddenly needing to look after your grandchildren who have been taken away from their parents and either come to live with you or are put into care. Foster parents get funded, however Kinship carers do not get any support or funding. James told us about his personal story and the trauma his 3 grandchildren have suffered which he has to deal with every day and the cost of bringing up 3 children. Kinship is for family or friends who step up to raise a child or children. Shipley Kinship Group meet on the 1st Thursday of the month 10.30 am to 13.30 pm at Shipley Library. James is willing to talk to groups about Kinship. https://kinship.org.uk/
Anne is the lead on the Yorkshire Rotary Accessible Games which is in its 3rd year and wants to raise awareness of the free event which is open to anyone over the age of 9 with any disability visible or not. It will be held on Sunday 18th October at Woodhouse Grove School. Anne is looking for volunteers and/or sponsors for t-shirts and printing costs. https://www.facebook.com/yorkshirerotaryaccessiblegames/
The winner - Kinship, congratultions James. If you want to come along or make a pitch visit the website https://bradfordsoup.org.uk/ The next Soup is on Thursday 20th August.

Polio Now
Rotarian Malcolm Tagg gave us an update about Rotary's mission to end polio. He reminded us that many people, unless they are of a certain age, have never come across the devastating polio virus and its effects. Polio, a water borne virus, primarily affects children under 5 and they may die or be left disabled for life, in worst cases if causes paralysis and the ability to breath. In this case if the resources were available the children had to be put in an iron lung so that they could breathe.
Rotary got involved in 1970 by beginning a multi-year project to immunise 6 million children in the Philippines. In 1985 Rotary International launched Polio Plus the largest co-ordinated private sector public health initiative. In 1988 there were 350,000 cases across 125 counties with 1000 new diagnoses per day. As of now the only cases are to be found in Afghanistan 3 cases, and Pakistan 3 cases. In 2025 there were 10. https://www.rotary.org/en/our-causes/ending-polio

Last week Rotarian Sonny was invited to the Millan Centre Manningham along with past District Governor Richard Greenwood to see the work there with women suffering from abuse. Saliha Sadiq , who spoke to us a couple of weeks ago, is the organiser of this incredible charity helping women who suffer abuse both financially, mentally and physically. The ladies get together on a weekly basis and are helped with a large variety of support.
