Urgent, and painfully familiar to many of our members.
In Jammu, India, Rohingya families have spent this week taking apart the homes they built. Landowners who had rented plots to Rohingya families in the Narwal area were served notices to vacate, and the families were told to be gone within three days. The shops went first, around 30 to 40 of them, and then the shelters.
Community members in Jammu say more than 500 families, living in roughly 80 to 90 makeshift huts, have been told to leave. Some had been on that ground for 15 or 16 years. Children were born there and have known no other home. Many of these families hold UN refugee cards.
One resident, a daily wage labourer, put it plainly: they do not know where they will go now.
RAUK is deeply concerned. A three-day notice is not a resettlement plan. It is a family standing in the road with their bedding on their head and nowhere to set it down.
We are asking:
1. The authorities in Jammu to pause this eviction, and to ensure no family is left without shelter.
2. That UN refugee documentation is respected, and that no one is detained or pushed back towards Myanmar, where it is still not safe to return.
3. That UNHCR is given immediate access to the affected families in Jammu.
4. Our supporters in the UK to share this, and to raise it with their MP.
Our community is scattered across Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Gulf and here in Britain. The one thing that follows us everywhere is being told that home is temporary. That has to change.
