Today is World Homeless Day, a day all about raising awareness and calling for action towards ending homelessness.

At Horton Housing, we recognise the importance of beating the stigma and stereotypes by making sure people who have lived experiences of homelessness can have their voices heard in the conversation.

David came to our Fairmount accommodation in Bradford in 2020. He was experiencing challenges with drug use and homelessness and had spent some time in prison. Through his time at Fairmount, David has focused on his recovery, rebuilding his relationship with his family and gaining his independence.

Welcome to our new Edmund Street homes!

We have officially opened eight new homes for families and individuals experiencing homelessness under our Bradford Temporary Accommodation Service (BTAS). Designed using trauma-informed approaches and psychologically informed principles, each home provides a welcoming space where people can feel safe.

The Edmund Street building is a significant part of Horton Housing's history as the place where we were founded in 1985 as the Bradford Day Shelter.

Family members of Ernie Gilbert Gray, who passed away in 2025, attended our opening event. Ernie was a highly valued member of Horton Housing's Management Board and key figure in the development of Chartford Housing, and his family unveiled a plaque at Edmund Street in his honour.

Ernie's daughters, Ashleigh and Philippa, said that they were very proud when they found out the flats would be dedicated to their father. They said that he was a “selfless individual”, who always gave other people credit, and that “he would have been embarrassed to see the plaque because he never wanted to be the centre of attention.”

You can read more about our new Edmund Street homes and the opening event on our website: https://www.hortonhousing.co.uk/about-us/news/latest-news/former-bradford-day-shelter-begins-a-new-chapter-as-homes-for-people-experiencing-homelessness/

Thank you to everyone who worked together on the refurbishment and opening of our Edmund Street homes!

Take a look back at our Wellbeing Cafe’s annual picnic in Selby Park 🌳

The day was buzzing with conversation, laughter, and plenty of cake!

We played our traditional game of bowls, and enjoyed the sunny weather and each other’s company.

We’re already looking forward to next year’s picnic!

Our new LIFE services launch across North Yorkshire!

Horton Housing has launched new trauma-informed Living Independently for Everyone (LIFE) services in Craven, Harrogate and Selby, expanding access to short-term housing and tailored support for people facing multiple disadvantages across North Yorkshire. The services were created to give people a safe and stable place to live alongside flexible, person-centred support, addressing the challenges that can contribute to homelessness and making it easier to access the right help in one joined-up service.

Commissioned by North Yorkshire Council and in partnership with Broadacres Housing Association LIFE provides accommodation-based and floating support. The service will help people build resilience, improve wellbeing, develop practical life skills, sustain tenancies and move towards recovery and independent living. It is available to people with diverse physical and mental health needs linked to housing and homelessness.

“The new LIFE contract will provide short-term housing and support to help people facing multiple disadvantages achieve independent living,” said Shida Khan, Head of North Yorkshire Services. Andy Kirk, Service Lead at Horton Housing, added: “This is an exciting opportunity to deliver positive outcomes for the people we support while enabling Horton Housing to expand its impact, housing provision, and reputation across North Yorkshire.”

The launch marks an important step in strengthening supported housing across North Yorkshire and creating a more consistent, recovery-focused pathway for people to develop the skills and confidence they need for greater independence.

Welcome to Fairmount’s thriving allotment!

Our Fairmount service residents and colleagues have worked together to grow some lovely tomatoes and cucumbers in their allotment.

Congratulations to Danny, who lives in Fairmount, for his hard work watering and feeding all the plants in the allotments every morning and evening. His tomatoes have been absolutely flourishing! 🍅

Andrea is a person we support who lives in a dispersed home under Calderdale Intensive Housing Management (IHM). Our IHM service provides short to medium-term homes for people to develop their independence and move towards longer-term housing 🏠

She shared her inspiring journey of overcoming challenging circumstances, and how her mental health has improved since receiving housing support and moving into a safe and calm home.

Andrea’s story shows us the importance of supportive, safe environments, and reminds us why we need to work together to create these spaces for people 💜
