A brilliant turn out last Saturday from Unite the Union members at the Durham Miners Gala and we were there too. We marched alongside the brass bands and magnificent banners. We found solidarity. We met up with old friends, (especially those from the Unite Community Leeds and Wakefield), met with new friends that we’d only spoken to online. We listened to inspirational speeches and talked to stall holders about campaigns. We even had members singing in the Commoners Choir on the stage and big screen! We were uplifted and had fun which hopefully you can see from the photo of members, friends, family and supporters even if gathering people together when there was so much to see and do was like herding cats. Thanks to the organisers who made it a wonderful day as always.

On the day when the energy cap was lifted we went out to talk to people in Bradford about how they feel about energy prices. 21 people filled in our survey and had long conversations with us. All of them found the cost a worry and all of them were cutting back on consumption where they can. Some people, however, find it impossible to cut back like the mother with a disabled son who needs to keep warm and needs oxygen to live. She told us all of her wages go on bills. Most people also supported the idea of energy companies being publicly owned and resented the fact that they are struggling in order to give the energy companies and their shareholders higher profits. This is a conversation we will continue to have over many weeks.

There are so many events happening at this time of year. Workers Memorial Days have recently happened in both Keighley and Bradford and then the Day of Action for a Wealth Tax.
Over the weekend on Saturday there is a commemoration in Barnsley of the general strike of 100 years ago and the Leeds May Day March and rally. On Sunday the Bicentennial March will take place along the route of the weavers during their uprising in Bradford.
But aptly for May Day, today was the official unveiling of a plaque to Julia Varley, born in Bradford and a trade unionist organiser and suffragette. She was a key figure in the Manningham Mills strike and was involved in the formation of the Independent Labour Party in Bradford. She was a leading figure in Bradford Trades Union Council and one of the first women to serve on the TUC General Council.
We also had excellent union speakers at today’s event including Mark Metcalf, Jane Aitchison, Taj Salam, Mohammad Taj and our own branch member and Trades Council member Caroline Conway.
Some modern day suffragettes also turned up in solidarity with Julia and were very excited to meet Julia’s cousin!
Great to learn more about Labour movement history and reflect on how we campaign today. Thanks to everyone who made this happen.

Unite Community members out supporting the Keighley Trades Council and Keighley Together community project today. We were publicising the Together Alliance March on the 28th March in London and promoting hope with the Keighley Together launch on the 23rd April. But most importantly having some great conversations and support from the community.

When people tell us there’s no money for the basic things ordinary people want, like decent housing, affordable energy, healthy food or health and social care the answer is clearly a wealth tax.

The bosses of FTSE 100 companies will have made more money in 2026 before midday today than the average worker will all year [High Pay Centre] 💰

UK bosses will exceed the average annual pay of staff in less than 29 hours of work, with the median salary for FTSE 100 chief executives equating to £1,353.23 an hour.

The High Pay Centre said a decline in union membership has contributed to the widening chasm between CEO and worker pay.

“CEOs are pocketing millions and their pay continues to shoot up much faster than that of their workers. So, let them take note - Unite will not tolerate employers who want one rule for the bosses and another for the workers.” Sharon Graham

Unionising is how workers start levelling the playing field in the face of bosses that hoard profits 📣

Fantastic carol concert from the Unite Brass Band today. It was held in Leeds but people travelled from all over the North East to be there and dressed up for the occasion.
Some photographs of the event below plus sketches from the talented member, Christine Hill! The music was wonderful despite our singing. The refreshments delicious and consumed before I could snap them.
It’s a highlight of the Unite calendar. If you’ve never been before be sure to make it next year.
