Don has raised more than £100,000 for us over the last 50 years! Now he's been recognised with a lifetime achievement award. 🏆

Don's son, Alistair, has drawn on our support for more than 30 years.

Just 18 months after moving to one of our Bedfordshire services, Alistair lost his eyesight.

“My immediate thought was that he would have to move somewhere more suited to someone who was visually impaired,” said Don.

“But Hft... put everything in place to ensure they could continue supporting Alistair.

Alistair still has a full and busy life. He attends a music club each Monday and enjoys making cakes.

“Alistair has always had a huge love of music,” said Don.

“It moves me to tears seeing his sheer enthusiasm of playing the tambourine at the music club.

“Hft has given Alistair a life of enjoyment, support and great friendships,”

"Despite the severity of his disabilities, he has a very enjoyable life thanks to the incredible care and support he receives.

“Knowing that stops me worrying about him.”

Service Manager Claire said: “Don’s determination and effort to always pull out all the stops and raise funds for Hft has changed many lives.

“We were delighted to present him with his lifetime achievement award to honour his 50 years of dedicated fundraising.

“He is a very special human being.”

Not all disabilities are visible.

In fact, it's estimated that 70–80% of disabilities aren't immediately apparent to others. People with non-visible disabilities can also face negative attitudes, a lack of understanding and social isolation.

Harry attends our Luv2meetU social group. He's also a disability campaigner and founder of Speak To Me.

"I'm a young person with a learning disability and I'm self-diagnosed autistic. I'm also registered blind and have medical disabilities," he said.

"My experiences shape how I see accessibility and inclusion.

"Some of the barriers I face are not always obvious to other people. Clear communication, patience, asking what support works for me, and listening to disabled people's experiences can make a real difference."

You can't always tell what someone is experiencing just by looking at them. By listening to people with invisible disabilities, challenging assumptions and asking what support they need, we can all help make our communities more understanding and inclusive.

Looking for a career where what you do genuinely matters? 💜

In support work, it’s often the everyday moments that mean the most. Listening when someone wants to be heard. Encouraging someone as they build confidence. Being there as they make their own choices, discover new opportunities and enjoy the things that matter to them.

At Hft, you can build a career where compassion, patience and reliability have a real purpose. You’ll stand alongside learning disabled people, supporting greater independence and helping people live the life they choose.

If you’re ready for work that feels meaningful, your next chapter could start here.

We’re so excited to see our Bedfordshire service featured on Politics East.

Good social care is about enabling learning disabled people to live their lives their way: building relationships, making choices, developing skills and being part of their communities.

Yet learning disabled people are too often overlooked in wider conversations about the future of social care.

Our service was recently awarded five stars by the local authority, reflecting the commitment of colleagues who work tirelessly to support people to live life on their own terms. But, like many providers, we continue to face recruitment challenges and the pressure to do more with less.

Social care deserves to be seen, understood and invested in. Thank you to the Politics East team for helping bring these stories to a wider audience.

There’s so much to love about a career where helping people live the life they choose is at the heart of what you do.

Being a Support Worker is about more than simply being there. 💜

It’s about listening to what someone wants, respecting their choices and supporting them to live life on their own terms.

It can mean encouraging someone as they build confidence, supporting greater independence or simply sharing the everyday moments that matter.

Because great support isn’t about taking over. It’s about standing alongside learning disabled people, recognising what matters to each person and supporting them to live the life they choose.

Could this be the kind of work you’ve been looking for?

Our new day opportunities centre in Flintshire is not just a space for the people we support. It's an asset to the community too. 🤝

There's a café and shop where locals can buy fresh produce and meals made with food grown on site. And plans to launch a vegetable box scheme and turn surplus produce into chutneys, pickles and jams. 🥦

The hub is also strengthening links between health and social care services.

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board are using dedicated space to grow their Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy interventions in a community setting.

We believe that community is integral to wellbeing for everyone. Yet learning disabled people too often face barriers to inclusion, and experience higher rates of loneliness and isolation as a result.

That's why places like Coed Y Ddraig are so important. We're looking forward to a future where it's no longer unique.

💜 Applying for a care role from another sector? Never apologise for having a different background.

When you apply to join our team, you do not need a flawless CV in social care. What matters is how you connect your existing experience to the role.

Tell us how you support people, how you communicate, how you handle pressure and how you work in a team. Be specific with your examples. Saying "I worked in hospitality" is less helpful than explaining how you learned to stay patient during busy shifts and help people feel comfortable.

That level of detail makes it easy for us to see how your life experience will help you thrive as a support worker.
