Springfield Unlimited is saddened to learn that on Monday our Chair of Trustees, Jeanette Sunderland, passed away.
Jeanette was involved with the Springfield Centre for decades, formally joining the Board in 2016. A long-time advocate for the rights of children and young people in Bradford, she brought that same passion and determination into her work with us, helping to shape not only what we do, but how and why we do it.
Jeanette believed deeply in the potential of young people, and in the importance of creating spaces where they could feel safe, heard, and valued. She was instrumental in the re-launch of the charity as Springfield Unlimited in 2025, through which we renewed our commitment to young people.
She was a strong and steady presence, offering guidance, challenge, and unwavering support in equal measure. Her influence can be seen across every part of our organisation, in the work we do, the standards we hold ourselves to, and the belief that every young person deserves a future without limits.
It is true to say that Jeanetteโs capacity for care was unlimited, as was her capacity for mischief. Jeanette was always interested in the lives of our young people, she loved to see their artwork, hear their stories, and celebrate who they were becoming. It was not passive, if something was an issue for young people, she would make it her issue too. She revelled in the joy that young people can bring. Jeanette would turn up to meetings with biscuits, always bourbons. Because our young people liked them the best.
We are heartbroken to have lost someone so passionate and committed. We extend our thoughts to her family and friends. While she may have resisted praise for the thousands of hours she gave voluntarily to our work, it is only right that we recognise it, and recognise how lucky we were to have her.
Jeanette was our friend, our colleague, and one of our greatest champions. Her presence will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her and working alongside her.
We will honour her legacy by continuing the work she cared so deeply about, and by holding firm to her unwavering belief in the potential of young people.
Thank you, Jeanette. You will be so dearly missed.
