Equity Partnership LGBT The Equity Partnership is run by and for LGBTQ+ communities based in Bradford and the wider region. We also provide awareness training.

We play an active role in developing our LGB&T communities by supporting existing groups and helping new ones to start through our community development work. We run the bi-monthly Groups Forum, where groups and individuals come together to network and discuss issues. We support LGB&T groups and individuals to have a say in the decisions taken by agencies which affect our lives. We work in partnership with other voluntary and statutory agencies to ensure that local services are appropriate to the needs of LGB&T people. We send representatives to the Council's Equality Forum to influence how their services are run, and to the Homophobic Scrutiny panel run by West Yorkshire Police, to influence how they deal with complaints about homophobic hate crime. Our training programme is geared towards giving organisations the knowledge and tools to combat homophobia and create LGB-friendly workplaces and services. Our Equity Centre provides a relaxed meeting space for groups, a fully-equipped training resource and a venue for events, right in the centre of Bradford. Our news bulletins and email updates keep our supporters up to date with the latest news and events. You can show your support for the Equity Partnership in several ways. You can have a voice in our future development by becoming a member, or you can volunteer to help us in the day-to-day running of the Partnership and the Equity Centre.

Akwaeke Emezi is a storyteller and visual artist centring radical possibilities and indigenous Black realities with the philosophy that re-indigenization is essential for liberation.
Through their art practice, they explore embodiment, incarnation, and sacred rites, reflecting on the space between corporeality and the spirit world. Emezi is best know for their award winning novels Freshwater, Pet, and The Death of Vivek Oji. Emezi is non-binary and transgender, using they/them pronouns.
They experience multiplicity and consider themself an ogbanje, a spirit related to beliefs of death, rebirth and the cycle of life in the Igbo culture from Nigeria. Emezi's experience of their identity was explored in their novel Freshwater.
Their visual art incorporates paintings, experimental film, and the fabrication of ritual objects.

Born as Wilbert Passerley in Jamaica, Pasuka studied classical ballet in Kingston. He moved to London in 1939 and enrolled at the Astafieva Dance School for further training in choreography.
Pasuka's breakthrough came when he was asked to dance for the 1946 film Men of Two Worlds and to help recruit other dancers. Berto formed his own dance company, Les Ballets Nègres, with fellow Jamaican dancer Richie Riley, notable for bringing traditional and contemporary black dance to the UK and Europe with sell-out tours. Other members included the dancers John Lagey and Elroy Josephs and the Nigerian musicians Bobby Benson and Ambrose Campbell. Beryo's vision not only challenged the limits of European ballet but also reshaped what dance in postwar Britain could be, ultimately laying the groundwork for a new chapter in Black performance.
After the closure of the company in 1953 Pasuka continued to dance, and was photographed by Welsh photographer Angus McBean, these portraits are held in the national collection.His last stage appearance was in 1959 at the Royal Court Theatre in Sean O'Casey's Cock-a-Doodle Dandy (dancing as the cockerel of the title). He also deepened his work as a model and visual artist.
Based for a time in Paris, he trained as a painter and exhibited with the Société des Artistes Indépendants at the Grand Palais in 1959. The following year, he mounted a solo exhibition of twenty-eight paintings in London, expanding his exploration of Black diasporic life, spirituality, and history into another medium.

Jacob V Joyce is an artist, researcher and educator from South London, a non-binary artist amplifying historical and nourishing new q***r and anti-colonial narratives.
Their work is community focussed ranging from mural painting, illustration, workshops, poetry and punk music with their band Screaming Toenail. Their work with OPAL (Out Proud African LGBTI) has gone viral across the African Continent and increased the visibility of activists fighting the legacies of colonially instated homophobic legislation.

Sophie Duker is a stand up comedian, who's starred on TaskMaster, Live at the Appollo and Celebrity Mastermind.
Sophie won the PinkNews Award for Entertainer of The Year in 2023 and the 2021 Funny Women Best Comedy Writer Award. As well working as a writer and researcher on a host of comedy and panel shows, she has performed and hosted masterclasses in stand-up comedy and improv internationally and performed her own sell out stand up shows.

Bisi Alimi self describes as the angelic troublemaker!
Born 1975 Bisi Alimi, is a British-Nigerian gay rights activist, public speaker, blog writer, filmmaker and HIV/LGBT advocate. In 2004, he came out as gay on national television in Nigeria, making him the first Nigerian LGBTIQ person to do so. He has spoken out about HIV and AIDS in Africa, campaigning from the late 90's after a number of his friends died from AIDS related conditions. In 2007, Alimi was forced to flee Nigeria following threats to his life. He was granted asylum in 2008 by the UK, where he has been resident since, gaining British citizenship in 2014.
In 2015, Alimi founded the Bisi Alimi Foundation (BAF), operating in Nigeria as a result of the Same S*x Marriage Prohibition Act 2013. He is the executive director of the foundation, who's goal is to accelerate social acceptance for LGBT people in Nigeria.

Join our blended book group, meeting online and in person. This month's theme is Zodiac and our pick is Mars in Aries by Alexander Lernet - Holenia, described by Patti Smith as "A book so astonishing I immediately re-read it", so we had to give it a read!

Data scientist Craig Poku advocates for minorities working in STEM, acting as the role model he never had early in his career. He is a trustee for Pride in STEM, an organisation that supports LGBTQ+ scientists and engineers around the world, helping to challenge public perceptions of what scientists should be like, embracing diversity in all its forms. While Craig was working towards his PhD in 2018 he discovered baking as a way to cope with the pressure of studying. Since then he formed PokuBakes, documenting his culinary creations online.

Kudzanai-Violet Hwami (she/her) was born in 1993 in Gutu, Zimbabwe, and now lives and works in London, UK.
Hwami paints colourful portraits full of energy and life, drawing from her experiences living between multiple places – Zimbabwe, South Africa and the UK. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in Painting from Wimbledon College of Arts in 2016 and gained a Master of Fine Arts from the Ruskin School in 2021 At 26 years old, Hwami became the youngest artist to ever show at the 2019 Venice Biennale. She uses imagery drawn from family photographs, collage and large scale painting, to create vibrant large scale canvases, prints and installations. Her work is held globally in national arts institutions.

Ivor Cummings (1913-1992) was known as the ‘gay father of the Windrush generation’. He broke new ground as the first Black official in the British Colonial Office. His openness about his sexuality, rare for his time, came alongside his crucial work supporting African Caribbean immigrants and building community, through socials, political talks and sporting events. After World War II, he helped recruit African nurses for the newly formed NHS and provided vital support to Windrush arrivals, understanding the importance of community support for those facing discrimination.
