Otley Pub Walkers

Otley Pub Walkers Walking group with a love of pubs. We put on fun events - some with fancy dress - and organise social walks to pubs in Otley and the surrounding countryside.

Talking of Haworth, if you want to get there the hard (but definitely interesting) way, you could always join this walk! (I'll be resting up, waiting for our Meanwood Valley walk the following week!) BB

It was a shame we couldn’t persuade more people to join us on the inaugural Haworth pub walk by Sue Ryder at the weekend. The 3 of us who represented Otley Pub Walkers had a fabulous day out [even if we didn’t quite manage a pint each in every one of the 8 pubs!]

The walk stretched to just over 11 miles in the end, and was well-stewarded and signposted, and they’ll probably be doing it all again next year if you feel as though you missed out! What’s more, the organiser told us they’ll be reprising the Wharfedale 10 mile Grassington – Burnsall – Grassington circular walk in spring [with TEN pub stops!] I’ve done that a couple of times, and it really is splendid, so watch out for more news next year.

A load of photos of the day attached, including one at the finish with a self-styled Branwell Bronte outside The Black Bull. Thanks to Nick, Catriona and Sue Ryder helpers for the photos! BB

Another little amble last week, to Askwith.

Didn’t get battered by balls on the golf course; sat for a short time in shade with sheep; managed to not slip off the stepping stones; paced myself to the Penny Bun pub; then weaved my way to Weston Church where I met a miserable millstone! ☹️ BB

All iterative!!

A few photos from last week, when I tried out a path I hadn’t walked before – from Bramhope to East Carlton. Usual route over the Chevin and Danefield to get to Bramhope. Quick beer in The Fox and Hounds then through Carlton and back over the fields to Yorkgate and down to Otley.

Usual collection of random cattle and horses, including a gorgeous Shetland that tried to follow me over a stile! Woodland, open fields, a new view of the airport and even a mini on a garage roof! Great day. BB

Crazy late notice, I know, but if you're at a loose end tomorrow Monday July 20th and fancy a walk in glorious countryside and sunshine . . . Vicky Parkinson and I are walking to The Junction in Baildon. Pub opens at 2pm, we're leaving The Fleece on Westgate in Otley at 11:15 prompt and walking via Menston. [Bring fluid and sunscreen!!] [Map shows a previous walk in the opposite direction.] BB

You might remember this post from a couple of months ago. I have now signed up for the 10 mile walk and I promised to post a reminder in case anyone else was interested. Everything I said before still stands. You have to apply individually, but if you do could you please include OTLEY PUB WALKERS as your ‘team’ name? Thanks – hope to see you there! Details at -

HEY PUNKS! Sadly, the Punk Parade that we advertised recently to take place on Sunday, July 12th has had to be cancelled! Everyone who booked through Eventbrite has been contacted and informed individually. If you were hoping to join but hadn't yet got round to booking, please accept the organiser's apologies for any disappointment - and their thanks for your interest. [There will be more walks in future, I'm sure.]

Just to reinforce what I said a week ago about rain not stopping play, we managed another couple of wet walks last week [though obviously not many people were convinced!] On Tuesday Rob and I walked to Ilkley via Burley, Audley Clevedon, Ben Rhydding golf course and Cow and Calf. Can anybody tell us what the big nesting box in the tree is for? [Please don't just say 'bird' 😅 or even 'big bird'!🤣] Pub interior photo is The Station, which is a pleasant place to pause if you’re waiting for an X84.

Then on Friday I went with Vicky on the test run for her Horsforth walk in Otley Walking Festival. [That’s all 3 OWF pub walk practices done now. Please join us on one or more of them if you can - and if they aren’t already fully booked!] The alpaca was doing its Marcelo Bielsa impression [“I am not a model”] but they’re gorgeous animals and it’s almost worth joining the walk just to see them! Then there’s a fully waterproof me helping with the dogs in a pumpkin field that changed colour as a tribute to David Hockney when we learned about his death.

There will be more walks soon – not just in OWF – including another trip down the Meanwood Valley Trail from Golden Acre Park into Leeds [with beer(s) at the end]. We’ll give as much notice as possible for that one, as it’s a lovely walk that you might want to join. [Please forgive all the brackets. 😂]
